I have this Bissell spot cleaner and it is pretty awesome for my area rugs. I have also cleaned my parents' stairs multiple times as well. It's not too heavy and you can't really get around lugging it from step to step, but the advantages outweigh the negatives.

@kitty: Thanks for that information! Its so weird how dirty the stairs get when the rest of the carpet is clean!

We have this exact same problem. It looks so dirty but we never wear shoes upstairs! My BIL used to clean carpets and he said a rug doctor will work but recommended spending like 20mins per step which is just too much for us to manage right now. He said the dirt really gets ground down into the bottom layers and that to help keep it at bay we can vacuum each step for a longer period of time as well. Too late for that now though!

The staircase in our new home is carpeted and is just a couple steps away from the front door. we do have a rug right inside the door but the staircase carpet has still gotten dirty really quickly, and we do not wear our shoes indoors. I think its just transferring under our slippers from the entryway. The dirt on the carpet is mainly on the edges/corners of each step. I wonder if a rug doctor will work for that? How do you clean your stairs?
