I try and routinely go through everything and throw out and donate things I no longer need. Dealing with papers is the hardest and every couple months I have to sit down and shred and file for a couple hours. With magazines while I read them I tear out any pictures or recipes I want to keep and put those into a binder. Then I throw the magazine away. I'm actually a couple months behind on that now.

We're moving in a week so every thing in the house is getting ruthlessly sorted and trashed, donated, or packed.

My SO makes me get rid of stuff.LOL With mail, we put it in a basket. We seem to go throgh it easier that way.

Our dog doesn't allow us to have much clutter. If we leave things out, he'll eat it. And since we have a pretty tiny house we just don't have the space for it.

Oh good post! We are city dwellers so combating clutter is...well...a fight.

The biggest clutter for us is also mail and filing. I save way too much and we get way too much mail!! I put things aside and let them build up and then a month later want to scream! On my list for next weekend is to clean and declutter our office, which will become the baby's room. Between the mail build up and my husband's medical journals (he receives like 5 a month and never reads them!) it has become a monster.

The past few days, I have been tackling room by room to try to declutter. I have gone through our closets and cabinets in one room - brought 2 bags of clothing to goodwill and just cleaned out our bathroom cabinet and threw out SO much. Next on my list is the kitchen cabinets (the tupperware is out of control). And it feels so good once you do it!

For me, I think it needs to become more of a quarterly thing because once we start getting baby gear it is sure to become much much worse.

My husband is an excellent purger and I am getting better at reducing the clutter.

Every 6 months we go through all our clothes to see what we can donate/get rid of and drop it in the Salvation Army box

Every 2-3 months I go through our panty, linen cupboard, bathroom cupboard and laundry cupboard to do a clean out. Anything expired gets tossed. In the case of bathroom products we donate stuff that we don't like (i.e. was a gift) to help keep it reasonable.

The biggest clutter for us is mail and filing. I am in the process of organizing this in a proper filing system and we have committed to making it a weekly task to file things away that have come in.

I have three New Year's resolutions, and one of them is to combat clutter. Over the past couple of years I've gotten really good at purging. The problem is with two kids and limited storage space, the clutter just seems to grow! A couple of things I'm going to implement are:

1) a better mail/magazine organizing, shredding, trash system

2) scanning Charlie's artwork and throwing them away (he does an art project every day so there's no way I can save them all).

3) Donating/selling/giving away all baby gear and clothes as Charlie and Olive outgrow them.

4) If I buy one thing, I have to get rid of one thing. We already have more "stuff" than we need.

What are some tips, tricks, and techniques you use to combat clutter?
