I've banked hundreds of hours holding my sleeping LO! Glider is the only way. I sit her on my left leg with my arm behind her back and hand on her bum. Her head rests up near my armpit/boob with the side of her face on my chest. No actual muscles needed and I have my right hand free to read.

Here's a pic where you can sort of tell where my arm is and her head on my chest.

I sit on our couch with my feet on a footstool, knees bent, and lie/sit the little one on my thighs. I can rock him to sleep this way too, by swaying my legs back and forth. He's asleep on me right now :) I wouldn't recommend falling asleep yourself in this position though, as it would not be very safe for the wee one.

My baby went through a period where she'd only sleep on me, and the my brest friend was a lifesaver! I have a fairly short torso, so once i clipped it on, I could rest my elbows & forearms on the pillow while she slept on my chest.

another advantage over the Boppy was that the my brest friend would not move once it was clipped on, so it felt much more secure.

Lay him on his stomach on your chest. Then you can recline back against the arm of the couch, or in bed propped up by some pillows. Or sometimes I would have him lie on the boppy on my lap, but support his head with the arm opposite from his head. So if he was lying with his head to my left, I would use my right arm. That way I could rest the arm on the boppy.

@Meridian: oops sorry, shouldn't have assumed. But the same position could work, laying on your side curled towards him. I never slept well like that but more comfortable than sitting up. Make sure to put a pillow between your knees.

It sounds like holding him forever isn't working for you. Maybe find some safe places to put him down? Bouncy chair, swing, etc. It's important for you to be comfortable too!

@ElbieKay: @Foodnerd81: Thanks! Sorry, I should have clarified, I bottle feed, so it's not so much about feeding... it's just about holding him while he sleeps in general! :)

I second side lying nursing. It's the only I could sleep with her. I also held her for maps sometimes in a recliner. The Brest friend was more comfortable for me.

Try side-lay nursing. It's tricky to figure out at first -- you have to figure out how to get into position, and then you need to figure out where to put your and baby's arms -- and it's not quite the same as lying down unattached. But it allows you to snooze pretty safely while LO is nursing.

Also, our glider doesn't have an ottoman, but it happens to be right next to a bed. I always prop up my feet so that my knees are bent at an angle that is smaller than 90 degrees and the glider is in a reclined position. I use a boppy too. That usually results in a comfortable position for is.

You might also want to look into the My Breast Friend nursing pillow. It's more structured than the boppy and essentially acts like a big shelf. It might take some of the weight off your lap and provide better support.

If your infant likes to be held to sleep, how do you keep LO safe, and YOURSELF comfortable? Bed vs sofa vs glider? Boppy? Extra pillows? What else? Especially if you want to catch a few winks too!

When I hold LO either in the glider or sofa, we use the boppy, but at 10 lbs, he's already getting heavy! My left arm that's usually under his head starts to ache, and I need to have my left leg propped in an awkward position to keep his upper half slightly more elevated than his lower half. Eventually, the 10 lbs on my stomach starts to leave me a bit winded too, and my neck aches especially when in the glider for hours.

I haven't found a comfortable position when sitting in bed either... we have an ergonomic mattress so I can raise the head side. But the boppy on my lap is pretty low and I have nothing to rest my elbows on. What am I missing here? Any other tips?
