I usually just put stuff in the shopping cart and sit on it too. I have been bad with all these great clearance deals this month!

What's worked in the past for me to control spending (not necessarily kids clothing) is to write down the item, the store, and price. Then at two- four weeks later return to the item and see if it's still something I just have to have. It may be harder for kids clothes because they grow so fast and clothes are seasonal, but this method has worked to curb impulse shopping. Sometimes when I come back to an item it's on sale.

I have all my non important email filtered into promotions. So I have to actively click on a different link.

I primarily online shop and will often let stuff sit in my cart for days to weeks. I also have a very strict price point on what I'm willing to spend on certain items. That REALLY cuts down on unnecessary spending because my dollar amount is ridiculous. Then if the sales actually match it, I buy to stock up.

I have a zero-dollar rule for LO's clothes. Other than rashguards that we have bought for vacations, we've never purchased clothes for her. We get so many bags of hand-me-downs from friends as well as clothing gifts from her two grandmas. And she goes through sizes so quickly. For me, it's easier to draw a hard line - if I started hitting up baby clothing clearance sales, it would be way too easy go sliding down that slippery slope. I'd be too tempted. Once she is an older toddler though, it might be worth it to buy some new stuff since she will be in each size for a longer time. We will see.

It was worse for me before he was born. Now that I see how short the lifespan of an outfit is (sometimes only 1-2 wears  ) I stop myself from getting extras....

This might be easier for me because I have a boy, lol. But all the store email I get skip the inbox in gmail, so I don't see them but the coupons are there for when I do go shopping. I also tend to just buy once for the season/size. So I bought a ton of clothes in the fall that I expect to last until I need to get spring/summer stuff in a couple months.

I look *really* realistically at what they need. I also go through their clothes frequently and try to sell some to offset the cost. I get sale stuff sent to my junk mail so I have to go looking for it if I really need it. I look at FB bst groups for used clothes before retail. And the Canadian dollar being absolute sh*t right now totally curbs the US spending (eg Tulas.)

@PinkElephant: It has been great! I also use it to sign up for sites that offer a discount, or sites like zulilly. Then I don't have to constantly get sale reminders in my main account, but I still get the discounts.

I only shop sales, never full retail price. I also try to only use the money I make from re-selling her clothes to buy new ones, so no "new" money is going into her closet.

For the kids, I pretty much only shop sales. I have a separate "shopping" email account, so all the deals and promotions go there, and I only really go looking through it if I know I need something, so I look to see if there have been any recent sale emails. I also only buy on an as needed basis. I've stopped buying cuter (and usually pricier) items because they only wear the good stuff on the weekend. I don't send them to daycare in nicer clothes because I know they will get wrecked.

ugh...I need to work on this!

I tried to have a "no buying" January, but have caved because it seemed just stupid not to get things we need for next year when they're on mega-clearance. I might try again in Feb or March, when I'm less likely to feel like I'm missing out.

I generally won't buy unless it's on a GOOD sale (and as a big shopper, I do know what's a good deal and what is not for my favorite brands), and be tough on myself about waiting for the best price.

I'm also trying a new thing starting with this summer's wardrobes where I shop in mini-capsule wardrobes for the girls....basically, I get them several "capsules" of clothes where there are a handful of shirts, skirts, and shorts that coordinate and can easily be interchanged/matched by my daughter herself. I'm hoping this helps me control myself, because now as I'm seeing more cute stuff, I can say "Nope, it doesn't match with one of her capsules, can't buy it!"

I do most shopping online and usually I can control myself better that way. For example, this weekend I realized my son needed pants, so I went to the store and guess what, I came out with shirts. I am more targeted online.

I unsubscribed from nearly every shopping related email sender. Gap, Hanna, zulily etc. Total deletion. That helped a ton. All of the daily deal sites were driving me nuts anyhow (gilt, zulily etc). They aren't great deals for the most part, I find.
I also make an effort as often as I can to really go through LO's drawers and closet. Rearrange stuff and pull the bottom dwellers to the top and re-sort the closet front to back. It makes me take a hard look at what she has (which is too much) and I'm like "oh I forgot about this it's cute". 9 times out of 10 it makes me kill a later purchase because I have it fresh in my mind that she actually already owns item X

Little clothes are SO cute...they are hard to resist sometimes! We are working on some serious financial goals right now though, so all spending has to be absolutely necessary. When I get an email from somewhere I don't even open it, and delete it right away. I got a Carter's catalog today, and wanted so bad to look inside but I didn't, I just tossed it right in the recycling bin. This is working for now, hopefully I can continue down this path!

How do you control the spending when it comes to cute clothes/accessories for your LO? How do you decide when it's needed vs wanted? Any other tricks to help control it?
