I have an official answer...I asked my Ped at our 4m well visit just now if we should count the final volume for the volume of water. She said final volume! I was really shocked. DH was there and he’s been saying final volume all along so it was definitely a swallow my pride moment and admit he was right :silly:

@raspberries: This exactly!

We used Enfamil, and on the container, it says to add the water first, then the formula, and each scoop counts as .2 oz. If you do the scoop first and then add the formula, you run the risk of constipating your LO!

@Mrsbells: We use the dr. browns! Never had issues with it and we use gerber formula and cool/cold water from the fridge filter which has been for us harder to dissolve than similac, enfamil. We do have to mix for a minute but still way faster than shaking them individually. Maybe you had a defective one

@Mrsbells: Try to flip the mixer (the blue round thing with blades) the other direction. If it’s upside down it will not mix effectively and you’ll have clumps.

I voted the second option because I make formula in batches and then pour into individual bottles. But I would have counted the other way with my first because I used to mix each bottle individually. :silly:

I guess I'm in the minority but bc we use th formula mixing pitcher a lot. I always count by the finished water+powder. So the 4 oz water makes a 4.5 oz bottle. But I stopped really counting after the first few months. (5 months now)

4 oz of formula is a 4oz bottle to me. Shaking the bottle adds air and makes it look like more than it is. It should only be slightly above the 4oz line once it settles

We used the total amount of liquid consumed - so for example, if LO had 2 bottles, one with 4.4 oz and one with 6.6, I'd report that as 11 oz consumed. (We used Enfamil, and I think it said on the box that each scoop of formula equaled .2 extra ounces.)

I voted the 1st option. But honestly I used a Dr. Browns formula pitcher and made the formula in bulk for the day. So for example I would put in 28 ounces and 14 scoops of formula and would actually end up with about 32 ounces of formula.

My husband and I had this argument when our son was little. His school of thought was 4 oz of water + the 2 scoops (or however much for a 4 oz bottle, it's been a while), my method was put the 2 scoops in, and then add the water to it to the 4 oz line on the bottle. I don't know that it made a huge difference, but I would count them as 4 oz bottles either way.

Nutritionally it’s a 4oz bottle, though volume is a bit more. But it counts as 4oz.
However I do think there’s some room for error since....if you make a batch of formula in the dr browns pitcher, say 20oz. And you only pour exactly 4oz if volume into the bottle....we count that as 4oz. But had you made a 4oz bottle IN the bottle it would have been more like 4.5 in volume so technically to pour in 4oz it’s probably a bit less than 4oz nutritionally.

It’s something that bothers me every time I make a bottle. Haha.

I count the water. However I don’t need to really track DD’s intake. She’s 9m old and eats solids 3x a day, etc. If she was younger I might have tracked the exact ounces. I didn’t switch her to EFF until a month ago.

I wondered this same thing!

I ended up counting the actual volume, not the volume of water I start with. I figured if we were feeding him anything else (breastmilk, ready to eat formula, etc), we'd go by the actual amount he drank.

What helped me switch to this is that I make all his bottles for daycare in the Dr. Brown pitcher. I send 5 oz bottles, but I mix 18 oz of water to 9 scoops of formula. As the volume increases it makes more of a difference, so I just go with what we see.

This is a stupid question but I'm trying to keep better track of what my LO is taking in before we go to his 2 month check up next week.

If you make a 4 oz bottle, it ends up being more than 4 ounces of liquid because of the powder....so do you count it as 4 ounces or like 4.5? I ask because LO never really finishes a bottle so I'm saying he drank 3 ounces if there is 1 ounce left in the bottle, but if I add that extra it would be 3.5.

ETA to add - he is not drinking very much which is why if I add in all those extra 1/2 ounces it matters!
