I have two different size barrels for two different styles. One is larger and I use that if I want my hair mostly straight with the ends curved. The other is smaller and I use it to make beachy waves (I prefer my hair this way). It is so so easy to get the curl/wave you want. To avoid the half-flat issue, you might just need to make sure you curl away from your face when styling the pieces that frame your face, and then mix up the direction of the curl throughout the rest of your hair.
