I used an emery board at first when they were soft and flimsy and then moved to safety first baby clippers. Essentially just small nail clippers.

I use the piyo piyo scissors and they are great! My DD is 9 months and I have to give her something in the other hand to distract her while I trim her nails. It's really an annoying task to do with her. I then go over with just a regular file and file them smooth. My son just sits in my lap and lets me cut his nails.

I asked the nurses at the hospital when LO was born what we should do, and they said that we shouldn't use a nail clippers or scissors at first, because the nail isn't well set in the nail bed for awhile (I forget how long it takes - maybe 6 months to a year?). Consequently, the added pressure can cause it to fall off. They recommended filing, peeling (like @Pawprints), or chewing - I peel after a bath, when the nails are soft, or whenever they start peeling in their own.

@Lady Grey: and @Danda: So your moms' solution is still recommended. And I agree, so chance of infection. Less actually than if you nipped LO's finger with the clippers.

We use the American Red Cross clippers we got in our first aid kit for the baby. It looks like this:

http://www.diapers.com/p/the-first-years-american-red-cross-tweezer-clippers-white-1001418?noappbanner=true&utm_source=Diapers_SG&utm_medium=PDP_SG&utm_campaign=di-sg-to-mobile&utm_term=american%20red%20cross%20baby%20nail%20clippers

Its not fancy but I find it works better than the other ones I've been gifted and the file was a no go for us. When DS was a tiny newborn, we did it while he was sleeping. When he got a little bigger, we sat him in our lap while putting the TV on or while one of us wore him. Now at 8.5 months, I just sit him in my lap and clip away while tucking his other arm under my arm. Feet and toenails are actually harder than fingernails! I only bite hangnails.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: ditto! baby nail clippers.

I tried the Zoli b nail buzz thing and it was great at first but the filing pads got dull quickly. Once I learned DD would tolerate regular nail clippers, I made the switch and have been using them since Day 1 for DS.

In the beginning few weeks, DS' nail just fell off because they were so thin and frail. We used a pair of Safety 1st baby clipper (DH did it when DS was reallyl small, because I didn't trust my unsteady hands). But since he's been older/bigger, I took over (same nail clipper). DS is fine during nail cutting and we've never had issues with it. In infancy, I used to do it while nursing him before bed. Now in toddler hood, he just sits and reads a book while I do it.
