I'm a daily zyrtec taker and use a sinus rinse (like neti pot, but in a squeezy bottle so I have a little more control) on particularly bad congestion days.

DH and I also rarely keep windows or doors open. I think having a garage has helped majorly this year. Our cars don't get as covered in pollen and we don't track as much stuff inside.

Other tips, wash your hair at night if you can so you're not sleeping in pollen that's clung to your hair during the day. And change your pillow cases more often.

@Raindrop: Ohh! Never heard that! I didn't even know I should be taking one everyday!

@MamaG: I see! Man, I'm positive K has allergies too then with the drippy nose and congested cough! Maybe I'll call our dr to see what he thinks. But first I gotta deal with myself lol!

@snowjewelz: Our doctor is of the belief that our air quality influences the kiddos greatly and doesn't advocate testing young. He's got more of a try it and see attitude. More than the runny nose, we deal with lots of sneezing and coughing. The coughing is triggered by the postnasal drip/drainage.

Honestly, I wasn't really sure that allergy meds would help K when it was suggested about a month ago. But within days we saw a drastic change. The meds say 2+ on them, but our pediatrician has recommended them for both girls earlier and just told us the dose to use.

@Raindrop: I've not been told this as an adult (not saying it's not accurate), but with my older daughter we noticed that the Zyrtec she was taking after about 18 months didn't seem effective any longer. The pediatrician told us to give Claratin a try and it did help.

Have you guys been told to switch your allergy pill every year?

DH and I rotate every year between the popular 3 (usually the generic - claritin, zyrtec, allergra ), we were both told by different doctors (same hospital though) to use allergy pills daily to just have it in our systems all the time to combat any allergies that come up and to *also* switch between the popular 3 because your body might build an immunity of one if you use that all the time.

Anyways that's what we do.

Usually generic Claritin or Allegra will do it for me, but recently I was a hot mess! And the only thing that helped was Flonase. It was my first time using it, and it was magical.

I'm finally back on taking daily Zyrtec because I just can't deal anymore.

The girls also get a daily dose of Claritin, but I'm about to switch them to Zyrtec because it's easier to find cheaply and it's preferred by their pediatrician. C also uses flonase and takes singulair daily. The three strike medicine plan is what she's been on since Christmas and it's working so far.

K has been on a daily dose of Claritin for a month now and it's made a huge difference for her too.

We have ridiculous air quality here between dust, pollen and mold and it's a year round treatment for us.

@snowjewelz: The Costco Allegra has like 150 pills per bottle and its only like $27 a bottle when they go on sale (which is like twice a year) - otherwise its like $34 bucks. So really, you just need 2.5 bottles to last you the entire year and its a tiny price to pay to not have SUDDEN allergy attacks. I haven't had an allergy-related sinus infection in years (daycare plagues are a different story) and 1 bottle of Flonase is plenty for allergy season for me.

@deerylou: Me too! Well, my problem is I don't think I get attacked often enough to prompt me to take something everyday. And if I do, I don't think I'm consistently with one brand enough to know what works... Ugh!

@gingerbebe: Ohh man! But good that you figured out our plan of attack so you don't have to feel like death!

@snowjewelz: We live in an area that is notorious for allergies, dust, and pollen (i.e. we live in a semi-rural agricultural area in California that is like America's fruit basket, so dust, pollen, and allergens are BRUTAL). Its SUPER hot in the summer (so lots of dust, especially during harvest time) then it rains from like November to March (mold), and then its spring time with all the nut and fruit trees blooming at the same time. When I first moved here, the first 2 years I was DEAD for like 4-6 weeks and barely able to function, constant sinus infections, etc. And it turns out my body does NOT tolerate Sudafed at all, so I had to turn to preventative care.

We went through Claritin, Zyrtec, etc. but it wasn't until my doctor suggested the Allegra/Flonase combo with neti potting that really helped. I have very narrow sinuses so my infections were out of control, so the Flonase really helped. DH moved out here a few years later when we started dating and never had allergies before moving here and he quickly followed suit on my regimen because he felt like he was going to die.

@gingerbebe: So much stuff! But seems like a really good battle plan! How did you come to these steps? I just don't even know how to begin to figure out what works great.

We take Kirkland brand's version of Allegra - I think its called Allerflex. SO MUCH CHEAPER. We just take it every day, year round.

We also do daily whiffs of Flonase during allergy season - really helps the sinus passage stuff.

We also neti pot every evening, and twice a day if we're fighting congestion. (We mix equal parts baking soda and salt and add 1/4 teaspoon to each pot of warm water). Gargling with the same solution also helps if you have post-nasal drip.
