I'd love to say I meditate, or go for long walks, but i'd be lying. I drink wine, and lots of it, probably not the healthiest way of dealing with it, but hey.

Oh I can so relate! Our house in Louisiana is still on the market and we are renting a temporary apartment in New York because we can't buy until the house sells. It's anxiety inducing. I just want to be back in a house. I'm afraid the Louisiana one will never sell and we will never find a house, or all the good houses will be gone by the time it sells and we won't find a place to live in that we love.

We've also moved a lot, and while I've loved some of the new places (Chicago - love!) moving and having a whole new routine is hard.

When that happens, I do one of two things and they're kind of opposite:
I find a store that I loved in the previous location that will the same and wander around there (usually Target). The sameness can be reassuring.
I go somewhere totally unique to my new place. It's fun to see a totally new and different place! Or DH and I out go out to eat at a new restaurant and try to find new favorite places to eat.

I hope the weather clears up and your apartment closes soon. The beginning of a new city is the hardest. I'd you asked me how I felt about our move to Chicago (one of the best things ever) during the first week, I would have cried and begged for a ticket back to New York. Not because I didn't love Chicago, just the stress.

Wine also helps. Or beer. With pizza

I changed the way I think about stress. I try to see it as a good thing, as preparing me for challenges. (There is a ted talk about it.) Buddhism/ meditation, exercise, healthy eating and sleep if possible. Also remembering to enjoy simple pleasures and be grateful help me a lot (I have been through a lot of stress lately and these seem to help).

I second both writing things down & exersice. Often times, just setting a timer for five minutes, sitting in a quiet room & focusing on long deep breaths is enough to get me out of panic mode and into a rational and calm frame of mind.

I haven't had the dual mortgage situation, so I can't comment on that, but in managing stress, I find that only two things really help me, one of which is exercise, which can be very difficult to find time for and the other is planning my year out and making sure we have small vacations and things to look forward to.

@Danizaur: Thanks, that is helpful actually! Because the little things are now amplified since most of my energy is spent worrying about selling our place. If I can make the other things more manageable then there is less stress overall.

It doesn't necessarily help in your situation but I write things down and make lists. My stress usually gets to me when I feel like I have so much to do and I don't know where to start. I feel like I have so much going on in my mind and seeing it all on paper makes me realize it's not so much compared to when it's buzzing around in my head.

@Chillybear: Thanks so much, that's a great tip! To your point I've been trying to fill our weekends with activities, especially socializing with other adults, so that we are never sitting around bored and idle, which I've found is when I'm at my lowest.

Welcome to Philly! I'm in the northern suburbs and I totally feel you on the weather. I'm sorry you housing transition isnt going smoothly. Hopefully, your lawyer can light a fire under their asses.

As for the stress, the weather is supposed to be nice this weekend - Take some time to get outside and get moving. Take a ride up to Peddler's Village/New Hope and check out the lights and window shop or At City Hall theres a great little Christmas village and pop up skating rink

I have been really stressed out lately and it's starting to bother me just how much it's bothering me! I'm fully aware my problems could be much worse, but I'm still not doing a good job of managing the toll it's taking on my health. We just moved from NYC to Philly which has been our dream for a long time, but it's hard for me to be excited since we still haven't closed on our NYC apartment. We've been in contract since we listed it in early September, but the buyers are in no rush and keep delaying. They still want to buy it, but are super relaxed about it. The laws are on their side BTW, NY is an attorney state and our lawyer is all over it.

Anyway, it was our decision to go ahead with the purchase of our new home in Philly so we have no one to blame but ourselves that we're in this situation. But I keep coming home to an empty house with a pit in my stomach knowing that we can't purchase any furniture until we finally close on our apartment. It doesn't help that the weather has been so terrible the entire week we've lived here - the sun only came out for a few hours one day.

Anyway, what are your tips for dealing with stress? Anyone else made the crazy decision to take out a second mortgage rolling the dice on the sale of your first home?
