Our tree is definitely a tree of memories. I have some from when I was little and same from DH. I get a photo ornament each year of the boys and am kicking myself for not always buying a duplicate as it would be nice to gift those to them when they get older but also have one for myself. Then we have ornaments from places we've been together or separately as I started buying an ornament while traveling a long time ago. So fun to reminisce!

I love my tree topper. It's just a star cut out of cardboard that is covered in tinfoil with a hole cut in the center for a light to poke through and keep it on the tree. Many years back when my grandparents were first married, they didn't have any money so this is what my grandpa made to put on their tree. My mom and dad did the same and my 3 brothers and I have kept the same tradition alive on our own trees.

This is how I decorated our humble little tree, except we added one more string of lights. All of the ornaments are from my childhood - 90% of them are wooden and look so nostalgic and cute. I have one ornament that I “made” in kindergarten that’s survived all these years.

Ours is a mixture. My husbands mom gave each kid one ornament a year and then gave the box to us the year we got married for our tree so we have all of them. Best of all she kept a list of why she picked each one, which makes them more meaningful. I grabbed a hodge podge of my favorite ornaments from my parents' collection when I moved out. Then we have the kids crafts ones. I did buy myself some filler ornaments when I first moved to my own apartment but we have so many ornaments they don't get used any more.

We do pick out one ornament for each kid a year as well. Ours get wrapped and put in the stocking for each kid to open. Though we do stockings on St Nicholas Day (Dec 6th) so they have the ornaments most of the season.

The christmas tree skirt is a cheap thing I bought on clearance one year. I want to turn my wedding dress into a gorgeous tree skirt, but I'm too chicken to cut it. Maybe some year when the kids are older it will make more sense anyway

Our tree is a mostly homemade ornaments. Every year I try to make new ornaments (although I slacked this year!). We have gold and red bulbs I bought for DH and I's first Christmas together along with pinecone ornaments I made. We've added sliced wood ornaments, ball jar lids with photos, book-wrapped bulbs, "snow" covered styrofoam balls, chalkboard ball jar lids, stars made from twigs, and gingerbread ornaments. I'm starting to run out of room....
We also have a tree in our basement that is a mish mash of ornaments from my childhood and stuff the kids make in school.
The topper is a Precious Moments angel that I love.

I love seeing all the trees. Like many of you we collect an ornament to represent a big trip or activity. This year DH and I snuck away for a trip to NYC and I'm getting him a metro card ornament. Usually we top the tree with a glittery poinsettia flower. Unfortunately this year when we unpacked the prelit tree the top didn't light. It was looking a little wonky but we didn't want to stop decorating to fix it so I jokingly added the head to my nephew's birthday pinata.

@catgirl: prescreening is smart! This year’s trip to pick out ours hit a point where my 7 year old, who had never heard of Mortal Kombat, got mad at me for never letting him watch Mortal Kombat because he liked that ornament the best but he didn’t know anything about it. It was ridiculous.

My friend picks for her kids and gives them to them when they decorate the tree every year and that seems like such a smarter idea that I’m regretting not thinking of!

@mrs.kiwi: yes, we do so we spend a LOT of time reading together. And they are young enough they forget what we read a year later. So I am hoping yearly reading ornaments will help them remember all our time together reading!

The homemade ones I get to pick what we make so they are actually nice enough to want to keep. We work it into our homeschool as a handicraft and then gift to all the grands and keep some for us.

@bhbee: I told DH I want to add extra lights next year too! To me lights > ornaments 😝. Love your gold/silver tree. I think I prefer neutral trees over overly red-themes trees but I’m not committed yet..

@erinbaderin: My DH did say that we had too many ornaments so I’m thinking of moving some of the kiddo ones in the back so it’s technically on the tree but on the side no one can see, haha.

@ilovepie: I like the idea of the kids adding a homemade ornament each year. We are big read aloud fans too. I remember you homeschool as well.

@meadow: it’s a nice way to keep some of their little projects! They would go into the closet or trash otherwise

@catgirl: No filler ornaments but it looks so good!!

@Lahela017: Love your tree skirt! I haven’t bought a tree skirt yet.. I’ve been using a white blanket that looks good only bc I cover it with gifts but I do crochet so maybe I can work on that some time! For some reason I have been avoiding buying Christmas things/decor in favor of making things by hand. I’m not into NOT buying things but for Christmas somehow it seems appropriate.

Ours is just meaningful ornaments on a pre- lit tree. The past few years I've had the kids make ornaments. We also have mine from growing up and my SIL has given us some really nice ones each year. This year I also got one for each kid to represent a book we read together (we spent 5 months listening to the series).

@erinbaderin: we also do an ornament each year for DD. We picked when she was a newborn, one, and two but starting when she was three she has picked. BUT so far we have pre-screened and presented her with 5-8 options and have let her pick from the small selection. They aren’t all my style but I pick ones that represent her interests or activities from the year.

Ours is a mix too, of ornaments I liberated from my parents, ornaments we’ve collected as a couple, ornaments the kids have made, etc. I try to filter from year to year the homemade ones because there’s only so many “three popsicle sticks glued together with glitter” ornaments I can handle.

@Lahela017: Do you pick on behalf of your daughter, or let her pick? We have this tradition too but I let them pick, which in retrospect was a huge mistake! I always hope they’ll pick somebody representative of who they were/what they loved that year and instead they just pick something they think looks cool - this year my five year old picked a Star Trek ship that plays scenes from the movie Picard when you press a button.

Ours is a big mash up too. One thing I love the look of is to put extra lights on our pre lit tree. We have tons of ornaments - a few kid things (only my favorite ones go up since we have too many), ornaments people gave us, ones from my growing up, ones from places we’ve been and life events, etc. I love a tree with tons of ornaments! We’re not home so I’ll have to look for a photo.

Last year I redid the tree on New Years (for Covid fun, left it up longer than usual) with just white and gold and silver (mostly used what we had a bought some filler on clearance). It loved it so if I had a second tree that might be my theme. Found a picture of this one!

Ours is definitely not a Pinterest tree either. We have a lot of ornaments passed down from my Grandma and a lot that we have collected over the years. We get a new ornament every year on vacation, one for major life events, and pick one out that represents what my daughter is into that year. She's 2, so we still have all the breakables squished together up high. I had to buy some extra filler soft stuff to make the bottom half look the same concentration of ornaments as the top. Haha. The star on top was my Grandma's and I made the crochet tree skirt the first year I was out of my parents house for my own tree. I love the retro vibe and all the memories each ornament brings back.

@meadow: I so agree! I can appreciate the beauty of a perfectly coordinated/styled tree but it's not for us.

Our tree is a mix of ornaments - mine when I was a kid, DH's when he was a kid, a lot of my mom"s and grandparents, ones DH and I have collected over the years, the ones that DD picks each year, and lots of homemade ones. No just filler ones. I LOVE it! Also, I like white lights and DH likes colored lights so we have ones that can switch - took away a huge fight :silly:

For those who celebrate Christmas… how do you decorate your tree? Pictures would be nice too!!

Last year was the first year we had a full sized tree (we just had mini ones before kids, and none since having young kids). I had collected a few ornaments and received some as gifts, but was pleasantly surprised that I had enough to fill out 7 foot tree. It helps that it’s in the corner so I didn’t bother decorating the side that no one sees! So, it didn’t look amazing but we had lights and ornaments and called it a good Christmas. I had a newborn at that time so that was good enough for me!

This year I added a popcorn garland, more pine cones, and some dried lemon ornaments to make it a bit more rustic themed. I also let the kids put up all their art projects that could potentially be an ornament… snowflakes, window art, clay creations- I let them put them all up. So our tree is still a hodgepodge of random ornaments but with a rustic vibe. Definitely not Pinterest worthy but a bit more put together than a kid tree.

I’m wondering if I’ll get pickier next year and not let the kids put up as much, or if I’ll want to coordinate better to make it look nicer… what do you do??
