A little while after LO turned four, she dropped naps except when we were off on a car ride longer than 30 mins. Quiet time looks like this: I say, "It's quiet time-you can join me for a nap or play quietly." Then I take a nap. Sometimes she tries to wake me up within half hour and so I have to say, Come sleep with me! or Not yet. It is still quiet time. :) She usually plays with stuffed animals, reads her books or something quiet.

DD1 (3 yrs 2 months) has quiet time every day for 1.5 hours. We have a tot clock and she knows she needs to stay in her room until the clock turns yellow - she is very resistant to the idea of having a sleep (even though she does fall asleep about half the time) but if I stress that she can play quietly, so as not to wake her sister, she is fine with that. She has a bookshelf in her room with lots of books, as well as some toys with small pieces that she is not allowed to have out of her room as they may be choking hazard for DD2. She also has a play tent, Fisher Price dollhouse, and some dress up and dolls in her room as well - more than enough to keep her busy but all of them quiet toys.

So far we haven't had any issues with her staying in her room for quiet time and she is usually very quiet in there. I've just recently scaled back the quiet time duration from two hours to 1.5 hrs as she starts nursery in the fall and has a spot in the afternoon class, meaning her afternoon rests are going to disappear

ETA: I do close the door for quiet time, but she also has her door closed every night at bedtime as well so it's not anything unusual.

I've tried and it doesn't work if I tell him he has to do it. He comes out of his room a million times and laughs and thinks it's a game. If I set him up with quiet activities to do, he will generally play by himself for awhile though. He's 3 years 3 months.

I'd start by identifying the goal, is it quiet time, like he lays down, or is it play by himself in his room time?

If it's play by himself in his room time, maybe put together a few activities that are only for that time, to make them feel special?

@chopsuey: and if you lie with him, does he fall asleep? I want my LO to stay awake...but I also want a break from him!!

@MamaChin: ah ok we just moved LO to a toddler bed. If I close the door he cries, and that just is not restful for either of us!

Right now I think I have it backwards...I am closed in my room and he has run of the apartment...!

We are still in a crib (he'll be 3 in November), if he tried and refused to nap then I'll put his mattress on the floor and tell him he can play with his books but he cannot leave the room until I come get him. He is capable of opening the door but doesn't. Sometimes I get 20-30 mins before he starts crying for me. If it's not serious crying I just leave him in there and eventually he just gets a book and plays. He has never fallen asleep during quiet time like other miracle toddlers.

DD has quiet time in her room or in the playroom.
She's 4 so she stays quiet for as long as I tell her to (1-2 hours).
DS is 2.5 and doesn't stay in his room and doesn't stay quiet so.. I usually lie down in his room with him. :)

If your LO has stopped napping, but you have quiet time for a while in the afternoons--what does this look like? How do you enforce it? How long is it?

I am attempting this for the first time this afternoon, and so far LO has been in and out of his room and it has not been very quiet :silly:
