@shopaholic: If she's walking or close to it she could be. I think DS "played" in the snow for the first time around 10 months. We just sat him in it was like being in the sandbox...but cold and wet!

Those one-piece snowsuits were our favorite for before they start walking!! We call them super suits. Like frozone from the incredibles... "where is my super suit?" Both our kids wore LL Bean ones every day during the winter until they started walking! We just loved being able to zip them in and not worry about them getting chilly... they fold over the feet and hands too so you don't have to worry about boots or mittens. And they had hoods, but we also had matching hats.

@SugarplumsMom: @lamariniere: Do they play in the snow at 9-12 months? I have no idea...

@lawbee11: Oh man.... dangerously cute!

@looch: Oh! Good point! I know cotton DOES trap moisture. I will look for some wool thermals. Excellent point!

We had a similar fleece hoodie to the gray one. We got a lot of use out of it.

I understand cotton to be a no no under clothes for kids, because it doesn't wick moisture. So if they sweat a little, they will actually be colder because the fabric won't pull the moisture away from their skin. We have a pair of wool blend thermals.

If you think she will be playing in the snow, get waterproof clothes. Otherwise she is going to get wet and cold really fast. Snowsuit/ski pants/warm waterproof boots.

@yoursilverlining: @looch: @SugarplumsMom: Thanks! I just got these from Old Navy. I don't want to spend too much since we don't spend that much time in the snow and cold.

@scg00387: I'll go check it now! Thanks!

As for layering, if you plan to have her out for a few hours, here's what I learned (which is all recent so it's fresh on my mind)

When it's really cold, wool or polyester clothes is best underneath a snowsuit or bundler (not cotton). But if you don't plan to be outside with her long, then thin cotton clothes will do if her snowsuit is warm. DD wore thin summer tights, regular socks and a onesie without a cardigan or sweater whenever she took naps outside last winter. Her bundler thing was so cozy, she didn't need anything else and would easily overheat if I added more layers.

People usually put this on top of the sleds/strollers:

For that age, I preferred thick outerwear so that I didn't have to mess with layering so much. If she isn't that mobile yet, then she'd likely enjoy being dragged around on a sled or pushed around in a stroller. I'd use a snowsuit for the sledding (with a sheepskin thrown on top of the sled) and a bundler/foot muff/thick sleeping bag thing for the stroller. I'd skip all blankets since they'll just get wet in the snow.

With a warm foot muff/bundler she'll be able to wear cute, normal clothes underneath - especially if you don't plan to be outside for a few hours straight, you can just have her wear the same things she wears now and just have that over it. It's super convenient for when you go indoors too, since you don't have to fuss with all the layers. Same with a nice, waterproof snowsuit. She'll be able to wear normal clothes underneath without too many layers.

For indoors, I love fleece, or jersey lined pants. For outdoors, I like a waterproof bib with a jacket on top.

We do a lot of layers - longsleeve onsies are our base, and then sweaters (cardigans, hoodies, sweatshirts, etc.). We have a couple of pairs of fleece lined infant jeans (from LL Bean, not sure who else might make them), or leggings under sweatpants/heavier pants. Hats that cover the ears (more than just beanies), and mittens/gloves.

We had 2 "snowsuits" last year before LO could walk - 1 was fleece and one was sherpa type material). This year I'm definitely getting something waterproof since she'll be walking. Last year she wore those snowsuits over clothes in the stroller and out and about.

I think for a 9 month old you might want to get some waterproof pants, too as fleece gets wet pretty easily if she gets into the snow at all.

We also did boots with socks.

I do lots of layers. usually a long sleeve onesie, then pants, a fleece hoodie and then a thick jacket. I take the jacket off for the car seat though.

We don't get snow where we live in SoCal, but we do have a family vacation home in the mountains for skiing. Last winter it was pretty mild when we took K in the Spring and she was a newborn. Just put her in a BG puffy bundler and kept her covered with blankets all the time.

This winter she'll be more active, but not walking yet (probably). We don't go up too often (maybe once a month or two). What kinds of clothes do you think she will need for snowy/windy weather? I don't think I'll take her outside too much. She will be 9 months the first trip we go up.

So far I have:
- Fleece BG pants (just ordered)
- Puffy/quilted BG jacket
- Lots of beanies
- Blankets
- Furry boots (Old Navy - not sure how wind resistant they really are?)

So, cold-weather Bees - what else do I need to get for basics? At that age, you think just still keeping her in the stroller with blankets is pretty good? Or that she'll want to crawl around and I need water-proof stuff? Do they have mittens for this age? We were gifted some, but they're huge.
