@Bao: When the kids were younger, we would have to sit next to them and make funny faces until they fell asleep. Usually they would scream until they passed out.

I get carsick too! Dramamine works wonders... without it, I am usually pretty miserable.

@Bao: We're traveling this weekend, too, and it's a pretty long trip-7+ hours. She likes the car, DH will be in the backseat, but she hates sitting still. This is what I've got in my car bag-a whole bunch of new dollar store toys and a few other things I found as well. I'm also going to map out splash pads along the way, so we can get out and run for a while. We are giving ourselves all day Thursday. My DH thinks I am over thinking this, but I know how crazy she can be.

Good luck!! :goodluck:

I usually take Dramamine and sit with him. he has a little leap frog puppy laptop that we keep in the car. He will watch Daniel tiger for a few minutes on a portable DVD player. Other than that books, songs, and frequent stops.

A magnadoodle was a big hit for our then 19 month old. We did a three days there, two days back trip last summer and that was her favorite of everything I got for her.

@knittylady: Totally not against screen time! We have a portable DVD player for our older LO and she also has a tablet/plays our phone but my 1 year old just pushes buttons and doesn't really pay much attention to movies.

Music and books are always a saver in our car. Also, the annoying toys that sing and have a lot of buttons. Maybe a new one will keep her attention?

If travelling during nap or bedtime really isn't a possibility, I would cut my losses and either keep the kid up way too long so they crash in the car or drive with screaming.

I really don't think anything can miraculously occupy a RF 1yo with both adults in the front. If you could fit in between them, I'd suggest bringing a tablet/phone and playing videos but they'll get flung if you're not there to control it.

Oh man, leaving for nap time is pretty much my only weapon. :bummed: Your ideas sound good, and maybe (if you're not against it) screen time?

@Anagram: Nope DH or I will be driving. I get car sick so sitting in the back will only work for a little bit :/ plus the "seat" in between them is barely a seat at all I wouldn't be able to move an inch. BUT if it stops all meltdowns I may just have to suck it up...

Drive during nap time in hopes they sleep!! Even though dd rear faces, I put DVDs on for her for the music and maybe she can catch glimpses through her mirror.

Are you driving them alone? The thing that works best for my car-hating LO is cheesy kids music. All her favorites like Wheels on the Bus, ABCs, etc.

If DH and i are both there on a longer trip, one of us just sits in the back.

We are taking a short trip by car for the 4th of July. It's only a couple of hours one way BUT my kids do not like the car. I have tons of ideas of my sleeve for my 2.5 year old but I'm stumped when it comes to my 1 year old. She rear faces still so handing her things is quite a challenge, and leaving during nap time isn't an option. I was going to go to the dollar store and get a few things that will be new to her, in addition to some regular toys and books. I'll also pack snacks.

Any other ideas on how to entertain my one year old in the car?
