Hmm, good question. Recently my son noticed my face was a little different after putting make up on, but he didn’t see me apply it. I would probably tell him it’s something fun that only mommies get to do. Then, I would redirect him in applying lip balm, which is something we let him do.

I only wear BB cream so I tell her it's sunblock and lotion. She's to young to get the part about evening out some red spots.

Wow, I wonder if my 3 year old will ask! She loves watching me do my make up (I barely do anything), and she likes to use the beauty blender on herself and then announce that she's done with her make up :silly:

I think I'll probably go with the "just for fun" or for "decoration", since I don't do it on a daily basis.

At first I told her it is like art to add colors to the face. Then as she got into elementary school, I told her it is chemicals that some people put on their face because they believe it makes their face appear nicer. Those chemicals are not necessarily good for the environment or skin. (If we go to a birthday party, she will occasionally put on gloss. lol.) Just read mamaof2 post and yes, we are the same way with occasional use-she will blink and stare at us like- notice anything different?!?

I wear make up to work every day and a bit on the weekends. DS was really obsessedsomewhere between 3-4. I just told him it is something that some adults like to do. He seemed fine by that. He spent many mornings helping me by passing me what I needed out of my make up bag. He eventually lost interest in helping.

@tysonja: Oh, I really like the idea of calling it "decoration". I think that's very easily understood.

I'm reluctant to describe it as "fun" since it would likely cause her to take more interest in it. I'd rather she left it alone for as long as possible.

I tell my three year old that sometimes I like to wear it for fun. She has also seen me leave the house plenty of times without any makeup on.

I let her play with it to make it less of a big deal. Like I’ll let her use my powder and eye shadow brushes on her own face after I have used them myself.

I like makeup and I wear it most days, so there isn’t really a way to hide it from her.

i call it 'decoration'. haha... i only wear makeup about once a week, usually for something slightly more special - date night, church, a party. they get that we make decorations for similar types of special events to make things look different/more colourful. :)

My daughter is too young to ask. When my son asked I told him mama fixes her self up a little more some days especially work days. I wear professional dress to work so I wear makeup to kind of match the rest of me. He said he understand but still found it to be a waste of time because I looked the same to him.

@crazydoglady: that's what I say too. I don't wear a lot of makeup, and usually it's just if I'm going out. My kids are fascinated and want to know why, and I say it's just for fun, like putting on a party dress. I also try to be gender inclusive and say "guys and girls" like to wear it because my son likes to have his toenails painted, and we live in a place with "ladyboys" who we occasionally see when out and about.

I said something similar- sometimes grownups like to make themselves look a little different, the way we wear different clothes or nail polish, because it’s fun. I don’t wear make up very much, mostly just to cover my dark circles, but my 4 year old seems to accept this. Like you I didn’t want to make it like I have to because my face doesn’t look good enough without it. Hopefully it was the right answer.

I tell them the truth. I don't wear a ton of makeup but I wear a CC cream with spf and mascara daily because I have blonde eyelashes that are invisible without mascara, and because I have lots of freckles from sun damage and now I like to protect my skin. I also have slight Rosacea, so I also tell them I like to make my skin less red.

They accept all this because I'm very fair and naturally blonde--my kids are biracial and have very dark lashes, brows, and tan skin so they understand why I "need it" but they don't. I tell them I want my eyelashes to be black like theirs, but theirs are already black so they don't need it.

My three year old surprised me by asking why I wear makeup sometimes.

I told her that it's something adults like to do as a kind of art. Short and simple answer, she accepted it. My main concern was that I shouldn't demonize it, or introduce concepts of beauty or body modification too soon.

I didn't have a chance to think first, and I don't know if I gave the best response. How do you explain makeup to your kids?
