@caffeinated: Exactly. People hear the word GMO and they get scared - and usually they don't even know why, they've just been told that GMOs are scary and bad for you and giving you cancer. The legitimate issues really get neglected in the conversation.

@sarac: i believe many people do not understand GMOs as well, and have this idea of frankenfoods, like 5 chicken breasts attached to one another.

Many people have this negative view towards GMOs because of the now debunked Seralini study that said that rats died after eating GMO foods. http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn22287-study-linking-gm-crops-and-cancer-questioned.html

DH is an agricultural economics professor, and it really upsets him when people keep referring to the above study. So far there are no valid studies that say GMOs are bad for you, but i understand why people are reluctant to eat something when everyone tells you that it is bad.

I think GMOs help third world countries, or will at least have the ability to help with easier pest control and higher yields. If you use corn or canola oil, any corn or soy products, you are eating a GM food without knowing it. If you eat ANY kind of processed food, there is likely a GM ingredient in it. It is pretty difficult to avoid GM foods nowadays.

The reason listed by BirdsofaFeather (small farmers being bankrupted) is the big reason I don’t buy GMOs as well. My main philosophy is to try to food source as local and as real as possible; and that gets harder to do the more small farms are put out of business. I don’t support huge agriculture or factory-farming, just like I don’t support WalMart. I don’t think cheaper short-term equals either cheaper long-term or better for the country long-term. (I also don’t support factory-farmed meat because I try to buy humanely raised and slaughtered meat but that’s a different conversation).

@birdofafeather: I totally agree that it's a naturally-occurring hybrid, but unfortunately, it would have to be labeled GMO under Prop 37 guidelines. My mom works in the food industry, and her concern with labeling is just that it's hard to decide where to draw the line about what gets labeled.

As a biologist, I'm pro-gmo. People have a lot of misconceptions and misplaced fears about them that just aren't supported by science. I don't have any problem with the process or the resulting foods.

My problem is with the food that ends up soaked with pesticides because of it - those are the ones I avoid. I also have a huge moral issue with patented one generation GMO seeds. But gmo in and of it's self I've got no beef with.

@littlebug: as far as i understand, a hybrid that occurs naturally isn't what a GMO is. GMOs are literally modified in the lab to be super resistant to pesticides, and to grow huge. the situation you're talking about would be a normal hybrid and has been happening since farming began.

as for me and DH, we definitely try to avoid them (along with factory-farmed meats), not because i think that GMOs are a different/bad kind of food at the molecular level, but because of the monopoly that corporations like monsanto have and the huge lobby they represent. it puts small farmers out of business and economically is a bad thing. their practices are not in the interest of sustainability and we're going to run into a situation where we have no variety of foods.

Maybe y'all already know this too, but organic doesn't mean pesticide free either (I know this is about GMOs, not organic, but anyway). There are many pesticides that are approved for organic use - REAL ones -- not just animal poo or whatever. Really interesting market, that is.

I honestly don't care either way. I find organic food to generally be half rotten and poor tasting, not to mention being more expensive. I would pay more if it were better food, but it is not. HOWEVER: keep in mind that I live in an isolated area in the middle of the country, in the far north, so there is not a great selection of produce even at the best times of the year. I'll buy whatever isn't brown or bruised and sadly, the organic or 'home grown' or 'unmodified' or 'never preserved' food generally is the bad looking stuff. We don't have trader joes, whole foods, etc. We have a Walmart SuperCenter. ;)

I'm not completely against them but am not a fan of a lot of them.

For example, one of the most common types is called Roundup Ready, meaning a gene is inserted into corn or soybeans or whatever plant that makes them resistant to the pesticide Roundup. This enables farmers to liberally spray their fields with Roundup, which of course boosts the use of Roundup, but is it really healthy to have our food sprayed with a massive amount of pesticide?

I think the thing with GMO is where do you draw the line with what you can't/won't eat? For example, I'm not crazy about hormone-enhanced meats, so I do try to avoid those. But a farmer could plant 2 types of tomatoes right next to each other, and end up with a hybrid type of tomato - technically, that is now considered genetically-modified. Will I eat it? Yes. Should it be labeled GMO? No, I don't think it should. The big push in CA to pass Prop 37 failed, and for now I think that's good. I think you have to consider HOW something's been genetically modified, and right now there's not enough information available for that.

I'm not a fan and won't eat anything that has GMOs. My motto is that food is best as close to it's original grown state as possible :) obviously GMOs not close at all to a food's original state :)

But I know a lot of people see no issue with it, it's a "to each their own" type of situation I suppose.
