Personally though I pick unique names as my favorites and avoid popular names. I have a unique name and I always liked standing out and not being 1 of 10 Ashleys or Brittanys in school. The thing about names is that even if you want to avoid "trendy", check out baby name wizard's name voyager if you haven't already - I bet most of the names on your shortlist are spiking. That was the case for us but when we figured out how rare some of these names really are, we realized it wasn't an issue - for example, my name spiked around the time I was born with 260 babies per million having the same name. It makes it a bit more challenging in adapting their baptismal name in Greek to a name in English. DD's name is similar in both languages though it is a different name, and some people will give a child a Greek middle name if they can't find an English first name that adapts well.
