I have grown more comfortable with it over time and am glad that the woman is confident enough to do it. I always tried to be discreet when nursing in public because LO hated any kind of cover and would thrash around until it came off.

It depends. I think you can still be discrete without a cover, and I don't mind that.

I have only seen a few people breastfeeding in public in my life. Everyone I saw, other than one, was covered up but I still smiled at the mom and then averted my eyes.. Don't want to seem like a creeper.

The one who didn't cover up was a Mom who's toddler ran up to her and asked for milk. His mom lifted up her shirt and he started nursing standing up. Her belly and everything was exposed. THAT made me uncomfortable.

An interesting thing about Sweden (at least around these parts) is that women seem really comfortable breastfeeding in public - uncovered! I feel uncomfortable seeing it and always avert by eyes but it seems as though no one else is fazed by it.

Even in all the pamphlets I've been getting about pregnancy, the cover shows a smiling baby next to a fully exposed nipple. You flip the pages and it shows moms breastfeeding twins, women bare everywhere. It's kind of nice that it's the norm but as an American, I'm just not used to it yet.

It depends. Most women I've seen breastfeeding are masters of rearranging their clothing. They'll use tricks like Thehistoryofus or LivsMama do, or they'll have a button down shirt like in the blog entry from earlier today. For that, I don't bat an eye. However, when my cousin lifted up her top and whipped out her boob, I was definitely flustered. Like others have said, I just didn't know where to look.

Before nursing I was all about the cover. Now, after nursing for 1 year, I am ao proud of any nursing mom. Yesterday I sat and nursed my son next to another mom nursing at the childrens museum. It was neat. I don't like staring but a nip slip would be my fault. My son was nursing at lunch today and not making a big deal out of it helps. If someone tries to be discrete it's cool. If they announce and make a big deal out of it (covered or not) its just annoying.

@Mrs. Jacks: ditto! I rarely rarely nursed in public but I used a cover when I did. I LOVE when I see women who are confident enough to do it & I get defensive for them when people are "grossed out"

It does make me a little uncomfortable, but only because I feel like then I have to look elsewhere and that makes me feel like I look like I'm grossed out by it but I'm really not! I just don't want to look like a creeper. Like the mom is sitting there thinking "Oh, look at you, you prude, can't handle a mother nursing her child." When really I'm thinking "Man, she's awesome, but I really shouldn't look!"

It doesn't bother me in the least. I'm very used to it from the years I spent overseas, where women would often just take off their shirt entirely to nurse.

Hmm, I honestly will feel a little weirded out if someone is nursing without a cover. It doesn't bother me at all to see someone nursing in public who is covered for the most part, just because I know that it would offend/make other people uncomfortable if they weren't covered.

I think it's a non-issue. Using a cover is a personal choice and I respect whatever choice a woman would make. I feel that my comfort/discomfort with someone else's choice is irrelevant.

I haven't nursed in public...just at home or other peoples' homes. I don't ever use a cover...i tried when LO was 3 months but she was distracted by it so I stopped after a few times. I would definitely try to cover up if I nursed in public but it would not bother me if someone nursed in public without one.

It makes me a little bit uncomfortable, then I get mad at myself for it making me uncomfortable because I actually think it is a great thing! I don't have LOs yet, but I know my nephew got so distracted by the cover that he never ate, so she would try to find a quiet corner-- but sometimes she hated having to be away from whatever was going on. So on the very rare occasion that I see it, I'm glad, even if it is a little weird for me.

i think, 'way to go mama!' i don't have a LO yet, so i can't say how comfortable i'll be while breastfeeding.

i think a major part of people's discomfort seeing women nurse comes from the fact that it's not common. i think as long as you aren't taking your top and bra off entirely and making a spectacle of yourself, it's a good thing for people to see it and for it to become the normal natural thing it should be. discomfort isn't always a BAD thing for people, growth can be uncomfortable!
