We have moved so many times over the last 6 years! My best advice is to find a neighborhood/parenting FB group or two (or 10). When we moved to Denver recently, I joined about a dozen different groups. I left most of them after I learned more about the vibe of the members, but I found a few that I like! One in particular is a neighborhood families page, and they do informal toddler play dates once a week--that's been a great way to meet other moms.

Going to parks, classes, etc where other moms/families hang out is helpful, too. I think it takes a good while to really find your place if you don't already know anyone (at least, it does for me because I'm pretty introverted).

I know how it is to not have the co-worker connection, since I stay at home and DH mostly works from home. It definitely makes things harder.

Good luck, mama! Where are you moving??

I moved like an hour away from where I lived; but totally different town/county. We had driven around to see where the stores are, and looked up things online! It takes time to definitely get to know the neighborhood tho, so don't feel awful if at first you just feel like a foreigner!

Online parent groups (to then meet people IRL), google, city guides if it is a larger city, maybe yelp too? I just ask random people too, especially if I see that they have a product or a shopping bag from a particular store.

@Mamaof2: @raspberries: we'll be moving for DH's work and i'll be relocating my photography business, so no coworkers for me to ask. i might have to do some asking of random people!

@runnerd: yeah, i've already started googling people in my business world. i should find their IGs.

@youboots: this city has a really bad yelp presence even though it's huge!

We found a few by driving past and stopping on a whim. But mostly, just from asking random people. Asked a new coworker for a dentist rec, then asked the dental hygienist for restaurant recs, then asked the server at the restaurant for the best parks nearby, and so on. Most people love to share their favorite places, you just need to ask!

Yelp! It helps me travel well and enjoy every city I have been to this year.

I never moved to a new city, but different borough in NYC. For me finding an online parent's forum helped me find great restaurants and shops we can visit. It also helped me connect with the neighborhood because I was able to find events they were holding and meet ups.

@birdofafeather: well this isn't true of when I moved to a new city, cause it was pre-instagram.. But I like to find people who live in the city I am interested in, then keep digging til you find an account that seems to be active in city and have your "vibe". That's how I find new things in our city, and for trips.

We moved and didn't know anyone - I mostly asked co-workers and then just driving around. I also checked out the local chamber of commerce site.

there's a strong probability that we'll be moving within the next 6 months to a place i know very little about and know only one family there (very distantly too!). i've already started googling stores that we like to see where they're located in the new city, but also types of things that we like/use to see what places carry them. i guess i was thinking that this would lead me to general areas where people like me live?

it may be premature, but i was just wondering if you moved to a new city, how did you find the places that you liked going to? ie: farmer's markets, local shops, parks, etc.
