I'm currently in the same boat. Haven't exercised for months. My son wakes at 6 or 6:30, I put him to bed at 7:30, and after that I'm just dead tired. I just started a new job that happens to have a gym across the street, so I'm planning to try lunch workouts. Is that an option?

I have a BOB running stroller and a trailer to pull behind my bike so I can run or bike with my daughter! She loves it and it is an extra workout with the extra weight! I do two strength workouts at work during lunch as we have a gym at work.

@Mrs. Microscope: "Something always is sacrificed, whether it is your sleep, some house cleaning/chores, or personal time with your kids. You need to decide what works for you." This is exactly it.

For me, because my youngest wakes up so early, I have moved my workouts to evenings, after both kiddos are in bed. I used to workout (uber consistently) at 4:30 or 5 in the morning, 5-6 days a week. I really miss being able to do that. But not being able to workout at my preferred time is not going to stop me from making it happen. So I do it at the end of the day now. Even when I'm tired. And even when I don't want to and/or there are literally 100 other things that need to get done, I put me at the top of the list and just get it done.

Btw I also live in a cold weather climate (long, cold, snowy winters) and we have a weather shield for both our BOB strollers. In a pinch I'll take my older daughter with me in the morning if she wakes up early. I usually wear something bright but definitely need some better night running gear. She usually holds a flashlight in the stroller.

@MamaCate: I agree with @avivoca: . I would be even more inclined to take mace on a trail than road running because there are less likely to be passersby to help you if something went wrong.

@MrsKRB: @littlebug: thanks to you both! DH has an old headlamp hanging around that I am going to try in the morning and I saw some arm bands on amazon too.

I am running on a trail next to a dry river bed. It is well maintained and there are no cars. There are occasionally people sleeping outside as well as wildlife and a decent amount of traffic. I have the dog so I think I won’t need mace. I think the light will be more to be seen by others than to see where I am going but I will see how it goes!

Ugh, it is so hard to find the time! I WOH full time, and my husband has a full and a part time job so I get how difficult it is to find the time. Our daycare also has limited hours, so there's no flexibility there. I get up at 6am, and do a 20 minute intense cardio video (my cable provider has a ton on demand) in my living room. and a few times per month get to a weekend zumba class at my gym. I wish I could get there more, but that's just not in the cards right now.

One other thing that's worked for me is being really intentional about how I play with LO. When I'm with her, I do as many "active" things as possible - we're constantly "racing" each other places, holding dance parties, jumping competitions, or rough housing in ways where I'm lifting her up repeatedly or carrying her. I also try to sneak in things like situps/crunches in our activities. I don't know how much of a difference that's made, but I think every little bit helps! (and she's exhausted at the end of the day, lol!)

@looch: Ours was just good luck, a friend was looking for a bike for their vacation home and we happened to be ready to part with ours. So they bought it for half.

If they weren’t interested we would have posted on Craigslist and my local moms FB groups.

I got an LED arm band on Amazon. I carry mace and use a single earbud for my music so that I can hear my surroundings. My streets are pretty well-lit, so the armband is just so that I'm more noticeable to cars. I can see where I'm running just fine.

@looch: I think there is a peloton bst on Facebook. One pops up every now and then on my local moms group. They hold their value pretty well (unless someone is desperate for a quick sale)...and the warranty isn't transferable if that's important to you.

@Littlebit7: My husband got a peloton and same for him - it really got him into a good routine and he’s lost about 15lbs (he wasn’t super overweight to begin with). We just got rid of ours to make room for the new baby, so he only had it about a year - but it’s put him in workout mode. He still uses the bikes now in our buildings gym or lifts weights. He alternates. He hasn’t been this committed in 10 years!

Until he was in school I did it before he woke up. 6:30am-7:30 twice a week. But to be fair I live in a condo with a gym so that makes it a tad easier.
Now that he’s in school 9-12 I go Tues and Thurs after I drop him off. I could have also done it during naps in my living room, I suppose, but by naptime I always felt like I needed to tidy up or just take a break.

I had this same question. Once I weaned DS at 2 (we were down to am/pm only) this summer, I started running with the dog around 5:30 am. It is great because I escape from the house by myself, I am only gone less than 20 minutes, and it is good exercise. Plus it is efficient because the dog has to go out before we leave for the day.

@littlebug: @MrsKRB: i am looking for tips for making running work before it is light out! Do you have head lamps or reflectors or other gear to recommend that isn’t super bulky? the sun isn’t coming up until 6:30 or so now and if I don’t leave until 6 it makes getting DD to school on time a challenge.

I never understood how people found the time. Then, exercise literally became my medicine. I have multiple chronic conditions for which there are no cures, only symptom management - one of which is exercise. I found out it's not about finding the time or having the time, it's about making it a priority and making sacrifices to have the time. I usually do it in between putting #2 and #1 to bed or have to do it after they're all in bed. It sucks sometimes, but I have to do it, so I just do. The morning thing just doesn't work for me. I also only work out at home which makes it easier.

I get up early and run (I just have to be back by 6:30, and then my husband goes running and is back by 7:30). Sometimes on Friday evenings or on weekends one or both of us runs with the kids in the jogging stroller(s). Once a week my mom watches the kids in the evening so I can run with our local running group. In the winter if I can find an affordable spin group that meets early enough I'll swap that out one day. When it's cold enough I can also do a quick run at lunch and then I'm not too gross (I work 40 hours). My kids freak out when I try to go run and they're awake so it's best if I'm out the door before they get up, even on the weekend. i can also squeeze in a 10 minute yoga video in the evening.

I exercise after putting my daughter to bed. I already get up really early for work and the idea of waking up even 30 minutes earlier makes me want to cry. So after we put DD down I either go to a class (2x/week) or jog on the treadmill. Sometimes I'll do youtube workout videos as well - FitnessBlender has some great ones!

Worried about how this will all change when the new baby arrives in June though...

I would love to take the 6am boot camp class I used to take pre-baby. I am too exhausted after bedtime to workout and it is not appealing to me either. I am a morning type of gal!

@JLC53: I only WOH two days/week but when I worked full time I used to go to the gym at 5:15am. It was brutal sometimes but I always felt better when I went. Now I usually workout to an on-demand video with weights and/or cardio in the mornings and take classes on the weekends when DH is home.
