My kid doesn't often eat plain veggies....but neither do I. Steamed, unflavored broccoli just isn't my jam. Last night we made a pesto from basil and spinach and had it on pasta, she loved it. She likes stir fried veggies in thai sauces. Mashed peas with garlic and butter.

E is almost 2 and has been getting most of his veggies in pouch form for the last 6 months. I keep offering them at meal time and then if he doesn't eat them, I'll offer him a pouch. He thinks pouches are treats, go figure. I get the sprout ones that are all veggie, or veggie and grain so he's not just getting another serving of fruit. He rarely will eat broccoli in it's original form, and will inhale the spaghetti sauce I make with summer squash, zucchini and mushrooms in it, but everything else is pretty much a no go. I'm hoping he'll just grow out of it eventually, but I feel a little better knowing he's getting some veggies from the pouches... oh, and from daycare, because he eats everything there. What the heck dude :bummed:

Sometimes it's how you prepare them too. My guy loves frozen zucchini that's heated up in the microwave but if I were to give him freshly prepared (sauteed, etc) it's a no go. I also add them to other things he normally would eat. I make a big batch of carrot or zucchini pancakes or muffins. I add chopped up veggies to mac n cheese and other pasta dishes. DS hasn't been a big fan of smoothies before but I will try those again soon.

My guy is a carb addict so I always give him his veggies before anything else, usually he is hungry enough that he snarfs them down, but once we add carbs or meat to the tray he couldnt care less about his veggies.

i feel like my 16-month old got much better about eating vegetables after his molars came in. before that i think it was hard for him to grind the fibers in the vegetables even if i cooked it a lot. it's just a theory, though--so it may just be a phase that improves when he gets more teeth!

I also bake spinach and zucchini into muffins and bread, and put spinach in smoothies.

I just offer them over and over and over. E gets broccoli almost every night. She eats it...half the time? Maybe. She is 13 months with 2 teeth. She also does better if i fork it into her mouth after eating some. Somehow peer pressure helps :). But yeah...it's hit and miss. It doesn't help that she doesn't see the same veggies over and over, so she rarely has time to get used to one before I'm putting a new veggie on her plate.

Butter helps! She likes butter/cheese.

No advice, just commiseration! LO pretty much only eats veggies in the form of a pouch.

I'm assuming it's a stage. Veggies just tend to be a little chewier than fruits, for one, so I think they are harder for him. And knowing he won't eat them means I'm less likely to spend all this time specialty cooking them for him. Which is bad, I know you are supposed to just keep offering.

He will eat spaghetti sauce on meat/pasta. And hey, that's tomatoes, right?

I'm not gonna worry too much. He had homemade baby from 6-12 months and ate plenty of veggies then. I don't think I ate a veggie until I was 17. Tastes change! I do try to avoid books and stuff that are like "eww broccoli is gross!" I'm always amazed at how much that enters into children's entertainment!

I have a similar problem with DS- he's ONLY eat veggies- no grains, no protein, nothing. We just keep offering (and sprinkling parmesan cheese on everything). The only time he'll eat meat or grains is if I make spaghetti with meat sauce.

Glad we're not alone, but sad others have to deal with picky eaters!

Well we call green beans French fries, that helps. My child has always loved potatoes, so I use trickery. I also am over enthusiastic about how delicious they are, she likes to eat whatever we have, so if I show her how amazing I think broccoli tastes, she will mimic that.

oh and also---make sure to make the veggies flavorful! My LO won't eat plain steamed spinach, but if I sautee it in coconut oil or olive oil, with garlic and onion and a teensy bit of salt--then she eats it.

Same with steamed broccoli plain--she won't eat it. But sauteed with other spices and herbs, she will.

What about putting veggies in other foods, while still offering them separately so that he still gets the "exposure" to plain vegetables while getting the nutrients from the hidden veggies?

Just for my husband (haha), I puree spinach, broccoli, or butternut squash and put it in pasta sauce, and my 10 month old eats the sauce on macaroni noodles as well.

I also make egg cups with finely chopped spinach, zucchini, and mushroom and LO eats those (I mix in turkey sausage crumbles or pancetta).

You can puree cauliflower and put it in any white food (white pasta sauce, mashed potatoes).

And then I also make zucchini fries and sweet potato fries (homemade and baked) that my 10 month old likes to eat.

@emg86: yeah the cheese worked twice for us.
@coopsmama: R is 14 months and won't eat any. We use to get to eat Sweet Potatoes but now won't touch them. I still offer with every meal but they go untouched. Same thing at day care, always a N next to the veggie for none. Once in a blue moon she eats some green beans.
Last night I mixed in her mixed veggies with her mac n cheese, and she picked out the noodles and if she eat a veggie by mistake, she spit it out.

I made a big deal about how delicious they are and let her be a part of helping prepare the foods. Letting her help cook was key for all eating habits. She's more apt to eat it if she helped make it!

Partly luck with her, too. My kid devours raw broccoli.

We just made a veggie pizza together last week that she inhaled. I made it myself last summer and she wouldn't touch it. I swear by letting her help in the kitchen.

I have zero tips - just commiseration. LO has been refusing his veggies since about 14 months. He used to be such a good veggie eater and he will only eat carrots on occasion. We keep offering them, but he will clear his plate of everything except the veggies. He's 19 months now, and his ped said to just keep trying. They have a mind of their own and are becoming very independent. Hopefully the phase will pass!

My almost one year old won't really eat veggies, with the exception of cooked carrots and the occasional sweet potato. He's super independent and will only eat things he can pick up himself - which means just using pouches as a way to get some veggies into him is out. He refuses them (even the fruit ones).

I've tried giving him things like the stalk from steamed broccoli but he refuses to eat them. He hates peas. Ack! He's awesome about eating any type of fruit, cheese, eggs, meat, beans, etc. but veggies are a no go and they make up a lot of our diet at home. :( He also only has 2 teeth so I'm not sure if that makes it harder for him.

Anyone have any tips for me?
