@Anagram: Extinction, checks just pissed her off.

R would want to eat every time. I don't know how much she was actually eating cause she liked to use me as a pacifier.

Sorry you had a rough night. We had a month of nights like that. She would fall asleep and then wake up 20 mins later. I still have no clue how I did it and work.

If she can put herself to sleep at the beginning of the night, then she is just having trouble going from one sleep cycle to the next. So I would do some sort of training.

@Smurfette: cry it out extinction method, or with checks? She used to sleep 8pm-2am, then up again at 5am, then up every hours after that. And I thought THAT was bad.

Then 3 weeks ago she started waking up every 1.5-2 hours all night long. UGH

This week it's like last night: LO went down at 8 and woke up to eat at 11 (actually ate), then slept till 2:15 and ate again (4 oz), then woke up at 3:30, 4:45, 6:00, 6:30, 7:00...didn't want to eat at any of those until 7 am where she drank a whopping 2 oz. So I'm not sure if after the 2 amish wakeup we starting letting her cry? Or if we try to extend her first wakeup back to where she was (even though she eats 3-4 oz then).

It's frustrating.

@Anagram: Yep! We did CIO. When we first sleep trained, we just said we weren't going to feed her until it was after 2. So the other wake ups we let her cry till she fell back asleep, even if it was 145

@Smurfette: @rahlyrah: Did you guys do sleep training for the initial fall asleep part or for the wakeups after? We are at the point id sleep training before I return to work in 2 weeks. Our problem isn't the initial fall asleep.... It's the frequent wakeups all night. I thought it was just the 4 months regression but it's been 3 weeks now and no sign of change. She's only eating twice out if the 6 or more wakeups so it's not hunger or a growth spurt.

It's brutal.

@Foodnerd81: I don't know if it would help your DD, but we implemented some verbal cues as well. After our routine (read book, change diaper, turn on white noise, shut shades, and bottle) I would say "Goodnight, sweet dreams, I love you" and then sing Twinkle, Twinkle Little star three times. As she got older, she started falling asleep before I was even done singing!

We also intoduced a lovey at about 3/4 months, but in our case I think it was more helpful as a tool to keep her to sleep, since we took away the swaddle at the same time we gave her a lovey. We also introduced her blankie at around 6 months, and that changed her sleep positively, as well.

I know it sucks, but hang in there! Hopefully things will turn around soon! :)

@Honeybee: I've been trying to start a god bedtime routine, but I think since it takes so long to fall asleep, it loses its meaning. We usually go into her room, dim lifts, change diaper, put on sleep sack, white noise on and lights off, comfort nurse and then either nurse to sleep or bounce. Oh and I try to read a book in there but sometimes she's not havin it- need to move not earlier in the process I think.

@rahlyrah: I'm not against CIO when te time comes, but like @Cherrybee: my Lo is still too young.

Naps were terrible yesterday but she did sleep well last night- nursed to sleep, slept a 6 hour stretch, ate and went back to sleep. She woke up an hour later so I brought her into our bed to nurse and snuggle and she slept until 8. Too bad I was squeezed in between her and Dh and couldn't sleep! Bed hogs.

I used to have to jump up and down with DD in my arms or walk her around the house for an hour every time she needed to go to sleep. :/ It was exhausting.

She did finally get better at around 3 months (I only had to walk her for a full hour at bedtime, and only 15 minutes or so for naps) and then again at 6 months (I could actually rock her to sleep in the rocking chair!). My only suggestion is to start a good bedtime routine now, so that she starts picking up on cues to go to sleep. Also, walks in the baby carrier often put DD to sleep at that age and occasionally car rides (if I timed it right), and I would sometimes do that just so I didn't have to walk her to sleep. Otherwisen I just have hugs for you. It does get better! Some kids just need a lot more help sleeping than others (my second was much easier to put to sleep).

I know a lot of bees are against it, but we did CIO. It really wasn't that painful. The longest he cried was 20 minutes (with checks). He wakes up at night but usually either goes right back to sleep or plays with his feet for a while and then puts himself to sleep that way.

We are in the process of sleep/nap training (LO is 5.5 months) but before he would only fall asleep if held while bouncing on a ball or nursing, too. Then we got a bouncer - it was a lifesaver!! I would swaddle him, put him in the bouncer, give him his pacifier, and bounce him with my foot or hand. MUCH easier than bouncing on the ball. He would fall asleep pretty easily and I just let him nap in the bouncer. Eventually there came a point I could bounce him for 45 min - 1 hour and he still wouldn't fall asleep and that is when nap training started... I was going crazy.

I take her into her nursery and, holding her at the window, I close the black out blind and draw the curtains. While I'm doing this I say "bye bye Mister Sunshine, I will see you after my nap". I then flick on the white noise machine and lie her in her cot, on her sleep sack. Without making any eye contact, I zip her in and pop her dummy into her mouth, waiting until she takes a couple of sucks. I then say "sweet dreams" and leave the room. She usually spits her dummy out and cries once - and then I pop back in and reinsert it, without making eye contact - and then she falls asleep. Although her new thing is to lie there murmuring softly and I haven't got a clue what to do when that happens!!! The really effective bit, for us, is the dummy. As soon as I can get her to take a few sucks on that thing her eyes start to close.

@plantains: That's awesome! I have a napping picture of DD in her jumperoo too. I remember being in disbelief when it first happened. She usually fights naps!

@Foodnerd81: Whenever she wanted to play, I'd try to tire her out and it made naps easier. The jumperoo helped.

@Kemma: nursing to sleep used to work. Now she wakes up 4 out of 5 times either when the boob comes out, or as I'm shifting to stand up, or putting her down, no matter how long I wait. :(

On the plus side she's been comfort sucking in we sleep for over an hour and I've had like 3 let downs. Kid must be really full!

@grizz: Throw them at me as well. She would flip herself over anyway. And another stone cause she has two lovey's in the crib too.

Hang in there!! R need to be ssh'd, and pack her back to go to sleep as well. I never had an exerciser ball otherwise we would have been in where you are. I thought that I was going to lose my mind having to go ssh over and over again.

Day care helped R, she had to learn to sleep on her own. She did sleep in the swing at day care but never would even tolerate our's at home. But the weekends was the same thing, we had to hold her to get her to sleep and would wake up if we put her down. It was awful. She eventually grew out of it and then we sleep trained her.

@Foodnerd81: it's tough because I've realised S's cues change over time, both in their nature and how early/late she'll use them. I now ignore yawns and put down based on when she looks "done"- it's the only time she's ever really calm and still, so was always misleading I think. I read to try a method (ie pu/pd) for 30mins and then try something else to get the nap. Also it took us days of pu/pd the first time we tried it... But I'm hoping it will last because I don't want to have to sleep train :(

I plan to tackle bedtime sleep first then deal with naps, so I just want whatever it takes to keep her reasonably rested throughout the day.

My sleep hating 11 week old loves going "up and down". We swaddle him, hold him upright on our chests, and then do mini squats with him in our arms loudly shushing in his ears. Not a long term solution either; I, too, am waiting for him to get older to sleep train. And for now I've all but given up putting him down bc he always wakes, so once he falls asleep I transfer him to a cradle position and sit either on a yoga ball or our glider. If he naps for over am hour, I can transfer him to the swing or Rock n Play, but I usually end up holding him for his 30-60 min nap. 30 is more common nowadays... :-/

@illumina: I have tried PU pd but not for long- like 3 tries then we bounce her all the way to sleep. I'm probably getting her timing wrong- it always seems like she isn't tired enough or over tired. :(
