Hmm... not sure if I am appropriate, but if he gets up from time out, I would offer him two choices. One, he can stay and do his time out here. Two, he will have to go outside and do his time out. He would usually choose to stay back to his usual time out spot 60% of the time. If he still goes crazy and wants to run away, I physically started carrying him and walking toward the front door, he'd usually want to stay back in his time out spot.

Other (easier) times, I just keep putting him back to the time out corner.

LO gets sent to her room. That works well for us. She will start sneaking up the hall and has to apologize before she can come out. It works because of the layout of our house. If we lived in a 2 story house it would be more difficult.

We do time outs on the stairs usually and if he doesn't cooperate then he gets it in his room and I shut the door. I don't know why but the room time outs work much better normally.

I just keep putting her back if she gets up. I also stand right behind her facing the opposite direction. For some reason, if she turns around to look at me and sees my back, she goes right back into timeout mode on her own.

We've only just started time outs and have had to do three but if she stands up I just sit her back down and repeat and repeat.

When she won't stay in timeout, I sit on the floor with her in my lap, facing away from me, no talking. She can't get up until the timeout is over. It works really well for us and she knows it's the consequence if she gets up too soon.

We have one of those 6-sided play yards/gates that we used to use to block off the fireplace. We took out two pieces and made a "penalty box" for timeout.

My son is 2.5 too and we do time out very rarely, but often that's during mealtimes. Since we have a pretty good association with mealtimes and high chair, I do the dinner time time outs in his high Chair. I just wheel over away from Thrn table into a more quiet area.
When I do other time outs, I just kee putting him back and try not to talk (super nanny style).

. @SeptMomma12: oh yes! We set a timer on the oven or our phone. One year for each year they have been alive. They know they can't get up until the timer beeps.

When mine get out of time-out before time is up, I put them right back. For my older ones (3 and 5), I even restart the time. Time doesn't start until they are seated and listening to the time-out rules.

The big ones rarely misbehave during time-out now.

We've been lucky and haven't had to use much discipline in our first 2.5 years but OMG do we need it now. My angel has completely lost his sh*t and we're completely at a loss. Trying to do time out but he just laughs at us and refuses to stay put. How do you get a defiant toddler to stay in time out? Any other suggestions? Dinner tonight consisted of him spitting water and food at DH, then standing and yelling in my face, while kicking me. Help! :bummed:
