Ours was our premarital counselor from our Pre-Cana program. If we go again, we're going to look into one either through insurance or recommendation. I emailed a family friend of ours whose a psychologist for recs. She gave some good advice about picking a counselor either close to home or work which will encourage attending sessions.

ETA: one of the reasons we went to marriage counseling was because of my MIL. I was able to say things about her in an environment where DH could really hear them. It helped a lot. I'm still not on great terms with my MIL, but it's manageable. I'm prepared to go to counseling again ahead of this baby's arrival because her behavior in relation to our marriage and our children caused lots of problems. TL:DR: I've been there and you have my support!

We went through couples counselling (and I had individual counselling) and I found it through my employee assistance program at work. You usually get a certain number of sessions for free and then you can choose to continue at your expense. If you have extra coverage you should be able to get some of it covered through that.

You can check your insurance, too--i know that mine (we have EAP benefits) will send me a list of people covered by my insurance, by location to my home.

As a social worker myself, I wanted to mention the NASW (our professional org) website, helpstartshere.org where there is a "find a social worker" option.

Your state should also have an agency that manages mental health licensing and you could look people up on their website to find people on your area and see if they have had any disciplinary actions etc. Good luck!

trying insurance first would help narrow the field. there can be a high start-up cost to finding a therapist because it might take a few visits to a couple of different people to find the right "one" for you. good luck!

You might want to check out if you or he has an employee assistance program with your work. My husband used his to find a counselor, and it was really easy - he called a number and told the person what he was looking for, answered some questions and they made an appointment. The first few sessions were free and then he used insurance. It was a really nice benefit that I wouldn't have even thought of previously. It wasn't for marriage counseling but his counselor offered marriage counseling too. I think since it is for 2 people, marriage counseling is usually only covered by insurance if one of you has a diagnosed mental illness, but I'm not 100% sure.

Do you go through insurance? Or is it something you have to pay for out of pocket?

There is some tension in our marriage resulting from opposing views on how to handle an issue with my MIL. I think a neutral party would help us navigate the situation a bit better. DH is on board but refuses to do any of the leg work. I'm just not sure where to start.
