My son isn't old enough for this yet but what my mom has done with my little sister has worked well. She was intentional about teaching my sister how certain foods are bad for your body, and how important it is to love and take care of your body so you don't get sick.
My mom is obese and has a host of health issues from her weight and past eating habits, so that has helped make it real for my sister, she sees firsthand how sick eating unhealthy can be.

How about trying to create a snack station in the fridge for Charlie? get a medium-sized tupperware and tell him it's his special food. put pre-cut/portioned fruits, vegetables, whole grain crackers, cheese, etc in there. it will be more appealing to him knowing its his own special box.
Try some snacks that are like-candy but healthier, like fruit leather of granola bars. Hopefully that helps!

I'd love to hear more about this, we're just getting into snacks now, and right now my son is addicted to Mum Mums. He'll eat 2 packages in a sitting if I let him and he whines when he's finished with his one cracker after dinner.

We don't have a lot of sweets in the house, but when we do, my husband eats them in front of our son, which of course means he wants them too. I've tried whole wheat muffins, those went over well, I have to mix up a batch again.

I have yet to introduce any junk food to the LO at 2 so she doesn't know what she is missing. I have her snacking on fruit and other healthy stuff. I usually offer her a choice of 1 thing and that is all she gets in between meals.

We've been wrestling with how to handle candy/snacks with Charlie.

He loves them of course, but they are almost all highly processed and/or filled with sugar (unless you make them at home, or buy special candy/snacks). We used to be pretty generous with this stuff, but after a while Charlie started begging for lollipops and cookies instead of his regular food... and his appetite for regular food also went down. :-(

So we've had to make a big effort to cut down on the amount of cookies and snacks that we let him have. One example: we used to bring him with us to the corner deli all the time, but he begged for candy and the owner gave it to him for free! So we've stopped going there with him every day, and only stop by once a week or so... usually on Friday, to celebrate the weekend! :-)

I'd love it if Charlie's snacks are mostly fruit; he does seem to love blueberries, oranges and strawberries so maybe this is an achievable goal! I do want him to eat normal snacks now and then, so that he learns how to handle candy/snacks in moderation. Otherwise if we're too strict now, he might not learn how to eat snacks in moderation. That's something I wrestle with as an adult, so it'd be great if he didn't have to go through that!
