We're on vacation with a three hour time change. Yikes! Luckily M can sleep wherever we are, so we pop her in the carseat and she goes to sleep... But right now, getting her to island time makes dinner out a terrible idea! We'll try in a couple of days!

We do early dinners right now to get home in time for bedtime. Now that she is older, usually eating at the restaurant will extend her bedtime (this kid will do ANYTHING for food!!)

We've also done order in food from an awesome place for a late dinner and eat together after she has gone to bed.

When going on a vacation with LO, you have to manage your expectations... For everything. It's extremely stimulating for them to be in a new place, so things can get hairy pretty quickly. That said, we try to mimic our home bedtime routine and time as much as possible. Our LO has always been really easy to take out, and rarely gets super cranky if she's up late when we're out of the house. It does get much easier as they get older, too!

@TurtleDoves: that is lucky!! I like Lo's early bedtime when we're at home (gives Dh and I some alone time) but it's a drag when we're away! Where are you guys headed?

@hilsy85: I don't have advice but I thank you for posting this! We're leaving town for a week and I am just: scared.
LO gets CRAZY about 15mins before bedtime as I change him, put him in his overnight diaper and all that. He goes down like clockwork and nothing can temp him to stay up . Luckily for us, E's bedtime is a little later (9:30)

I'm glad PP are saying that babies get a bit more flexible with age.

My son used to be the same, but I do find that as he gets older, we can stretch him a little beyond bedtime if we need to.

That said, we pretty much always go out to dinner around 5 p.m. now (bedtime is 7). He loves being out and about so will not melt down if we are in a restaurant - he might whine for some food, but that's it. But, I HATE it when he falls asleep on the way home from dinner, he is sooo angry when we get home.

We always ate super early as well which is nice because the restaurants are always empty and we don't have to worry about the kids being too loud. It does get easier and more flexible as your LO gets older and is able to handle longer wake times. We love to travel and though sometimes it can be hard with kids, we make it work. We definitely don't have much evening activities on our trips, though, aside from dinner. We also have our kids in a more flexible schedule on the weekends so that the occasional late bedtime won't be as disruptive to their schedules.

@artbee: yeah I wish we could push LO's bedtime but he chose 7 pm, more or less--that's when he started doing his long stretches...

It sounds like it's just something that gets better as they get older...?

Of course it does depend on your LO, but for us my LO has gotten more flexible with bedtime as she gets older. We actually have a later bedtime for this reason though..... I don't want to be home at 5 every night. We like to go out to eat on weekends. LO's bedtime is 8:20 every night. So we still can't be out late late, but at least we can go out a little bit.

our LO is definitely a bit more flexible now that he's almost 9 months, but still, about 1/2 hour past his bedtime is about all he can take! I'd just plan earlier dinners! :) OR go somewhere with a different time zone (head east?) and then he will naturally have a 'later' bedtime. at least for a while!! :)

At 4 months if we went out for dinner it was always at 5pm! My LO also couldn't handle being pushed too late past his bedtime at that age. They're just too young to deal with even a little bit of overtiredness without having a meltdown!!

It does get better though! At 7/8 months we would stretch bedtime on occasion and now at almost a year we do it without getting too stressed about it. If we're out we never get meltdowns (he loves restaurants!) but we usually pay for it with an earlier wake up the next morning.

We went away this past weekend with LO for about 4 nights. We were with another couple, and so we had planned dinners out for all the nights. I had assumed that if we did an early dinner at 6ish (LO's bedtime is 7ish), he would be able to handle staying up a little past bedtime without melting down. He's 4 months old.

BOY WAS I WRONG! He ended up crying through dinner the first night, so DH or I had to hold him and walk around the restaurant while the other sat and ate. The other two nights, I ate in our room with him while DH had dinner with our friends. Not exactly how we planned it!

So how do you handle dinners when on vacation with LO? Do you just always eat in your room with LO sleeping? Do you go out SUPER early (like 5pm) to keep Lo's bedtime consistent? We had been considering going on a vacation to Europe with LO later this year, but after this weekend I don't see how it would be possible to do that without staying in our room every day from 6pm onwards. Does it just get better as they get older?
