I would have verbally punched him in the face. No joke.

For normal toddler misbehavior I range between letting them figure it out and saying gently but firmly 'no, we don't hit/kick/etc' to the other child. For a four year old flat out hitting my daughter I would have yelled 'THAT IS NOT OK' both to the child and to his mother. That's WAY out of the range of normal kid bad choices.

@autumnlove: Oh, man. One time I heard a woman call my dog ugly (which, as a bulldog, I guess she is kind of cute/ugly) and I nearly lost my mind - just internally, though, as I didn't say anything so as not too look too crazy. So I can't even imagine how I would feel if someone said that about my LO, even if it was a little kid.

I would have said something along the lines of "you do NOT hit other kids" and maybe asked him where his mom was. I cannot believe his mom didn't apologize to you though. I think that's the worst part of the story!

Ugh, I am so sorry. A little boy called my LO ugly the other day at BRU and his mom did nothing...I was pretty annoyed but I didn't do anything.

@NerdBee: YES! Like, deliberately back handed her! She has a scratch down her chin from it!

@mediagirl: I did actually say something to the kid, but he just looked at me like I was stupid and ignored me.

Ugh, I'm sorry that happened to you. I think that, like you, I would have been shocked more than anything. When stuff like that happens I tend to just quickly get out of the situation and then later I think about what I could/should have done.

@Honeybee: exactly this.

Although if a 4 year old backhanded my 10 month old in the face, I would have probably hunted his parent down. Kid to kid is misbehavior but kid to baby is unacceptable.

I totally just read this and I cannot believe you held it together to not rip the mother's head off!!

I understand kids get hurt and can even be bullied. But flat out hitting a baby for no reason is NOT acceptable.

@zippylef: same thing happened to us this weekend!
We were at an indoor playground. J was walking around laughing having a great time and another little (4 year old?) boy pushed him down. Really??
I've noticed that a lot of parents are AWFUL in these things. They let their kids run wild and misbehave and just sit there and talk on their cellphones.

What!?! BACK-HANDED HER IN THE FACE?!?!

Omg, I would be livid!!! I'm not sure how I would react in the moment because I would have been as shocked as you. But having some time to think about it now, I would have loudly shouted "who does this boy belong to??" Once his parent claimed him, I would probably lay into his parent about what he did and at least get an apology.

I can't believe that his mom didnt even reprimand him!! If that we're my boy, I would be apologizing up and down and dragging him home

Oh dear. I had a 23 month old hit M over the head with a block this weekend. I pulled her away from him and was about to tell him that we have to be nice when his Mom came over and told him he doesn't hit people and put him in timeout for a few seconds. I was thankful she took charge there.

I think she handled it really well, too. Her timeout was standing with him in the corner telling him what he did wrong and how we are supposed to play. After the "timeout" he came back to M and offered her the same block he had previously hit her over the head with. :)

After this weekend, I now know that I will have no problem verbally disciplining other children. I think it is interesting you don't know how you would react until you're put in that situation.

I tell the kid, "we don't do xyz behavior" and ask them to appololgize. Most kids are so surprised that another adult would talk to them like that, they immediately appologize and run away. Luckily, I've only had it happen maybe 3 times and every time the kid said sorry and ran away.

I would have punched them in the face? No, kidding...but I would have wanted to. I would have been so ticked off though, I probably would have said something once the shock wore off!

I took C, who is 10 months old, to an indoor play area today. It has a baby/toddler section and she was in there playing with these spinning blocks on the wall. Another bigger, older (probably 4 or so) kid came in and went over to where she was playing. I guess he felt that she was in his way because he looked right at her and back-handed her in her face. She fell down and started screaming.

I was so shocked I just grabbed her and walked off. The older kid's mom waited until after I had walked away to go get him and all she did was tell him not to play in the baby area, where he shouldn't have been playing in the first place.

I was so angry when it happened that I didn't say anything to her. How do you handle things like this?
