My LO always adjusted good when we would do daytime outtings, she sleeps well in a stroller/car seat. (but we can not mess with her bedtime...that's when the bear comes out :) ) I just took plenty of snacks or purees, a sippy, a bottle (frozen milk if he will take it) and planned for every scenerio possible.

@Adira: ugh I know, it drove me INSANE that LO wouldn't nurse while we were out at that age! You can always try though, maybe in the car with some static on the radio?

@butterbean: That's how I am now!! Xander's eating schedule rules my life, haha. The last time I was out and about for the day, I was able to just nurse him in my car, but I think we'll be walking around the city, so I'm not sure if that will be a possibility! Plus it's FREEZING in December, so I probably wouldn't want to do that anyway, haha. Not sure about a bathroom!

@hilsy85: Yeah, I think 5 hours is roughly what I can go too! I guess I could hand express if I had to (or maybe I should bring my manual pump with me...), though the thought of that is annoying since I'll be with Xander so I'll want him to eat straight from the source! Damn distracted babies!

When DD was that age we followed her routine as best as we could. In terms of naps, we timed our outing(s) so that we had an opportunity to drive around a bit while DD napped in the car. Eating wasn't so hard to figure out, it was the naps I was most concerned about.

@Adira: ah gotcha...at that age, I think I could go around 5 hours without nursing without being too uncomfortable--and if worst coems to worst and he's too distracted to nurse (which my LO would be for sure) you could always hand express in a bathroom. I would just bring a few pouches and some puffs or mum mums--do you have any frozen milk you could bring in a bottle just in case?

@Adira: yea i haven't been out the entire day with the LO and even when we are out, it's usually no more for 3-4 hours because i tell my DH that i need to go home and pump!! maybe you can nurse him in the bathroom?

@Smurfette: I was JUST about to make another post about that! The only stroller I currently have is the one that our carseat goes into, so I'll need a new stroller soon and need suggestions!

@hilsy85: I'm not sure how long the nutcracker is! I'll have to check. And I think my stress with nursing is just that if he DOESN'T, I'll be engorged and uncomfortable! Plus if he doesn't nurse and I don't have a ton of solids for him, I'm guessing he'd get hungry and cranky... I don't know - I've never done this, haha!

@locavore_mama: My problem with Xander is that even if he's due for a nap, he'll fight it in the car! And then he often won't fall asleep until we're 5 minutes from our destination! He's not a normal baby who falls asleep in the car, the little stinker!

@Smurfette: @butterbean: I'm not sure if Xander is willing to nap while being held or worn... for the past few months, the only times he's fallen asleep on me is when nursing. But more often than not, he's not in the mood for that and will fuss until I put him down in his crib! So I'm not sure how he would be if I was wearing him for the majority of the time!

@butterbean: I wonder if I would need to plan on bottles... although then I would need to pump, so maybe not a good option if we're going to be out all day. The problem with nursing is that Xander's REALLY distractable, so I would need to find somewhere quiet I could nurse him... hmmm...

@looch: Feeding in the stroller is a good idea - I didn't think of that!

I'm more lax about schedules so I would just try to plan driving to and from around nap time. And hope he takes a third nap in the stroller or ergo. Food wise lo has always been a great eater when we're out so I can always find something for her to eat. But I always throw 2 pouches and a bunch of snack and water in the diaper bag.

He'll be fine! It's one day. And my LO is always in a better mood when we're out about.

My LO will nap in the ergo if he's tired enough...at that age he was transitioning to 2 naps, so I would have left in the morning either so he coudl take his first nap in the car, OR left after he woke up from his first nap (preferable) and then hoped that he would take a 2nd nap in the ergo on the go.

For food, I would just bring a pouch and feed it to him when he seems hungry. I didn't stress about skipping a meal of solids until maybe 10/11 months? Also, if you're eating, he can have a few small bites of whatever you're having as well.

As for nursing, I often found that if we were out and about my LO had zero interest in nursing, so I wouldn't stress about that.

How long is the nutcracker? There's no way LO would be able to sit through more than a a half hour show at that age (if even that) but he is exceptionally wiggly :)

@Adira: LO doesn't really nap in his stroller but he will nap when carried in the ergo...when we go out, we would keep in his stroller and when we know his naptime is approaching, we take him out of the stroller and baby wear (he'll usually fall asleep within 15 minutes). his naps aren't as long as we would like when he is in the ergo but at least he is catching some zzzzz's....are you open to baby wearing?

as for nursing, we give him a bottle (i'm not comfortable enough to nurse in public  )

We haven't done a whole day yet, but R can still fall asleep in the car seat/stroller. Or when we are out at a family or friend's house, and I know she is due for a nap/tired, I wear her. And she will usually fall asleep.

As for solids, we bring her "lunch" of purees with us every weekend when we go out to lunch or at someone's house.

I would try and time a nap during the show. So you can just hold him and he won't be fussy.

My son wasn't a reliable on the go napper, so if we were in that situation, I would have either skipped it entirely or skipped the Nutcracker portion and done the other wintery stuff.

I have fed my son in his stroller a number of times, the only advice i have there is to bring a small towel, I can't tell you how food gets in the crevices, but it does!

LO won't nap in the stroller carrier or carseat so we need somewhere to go and take his nap in a pack n play. I pack his lunches with easy finger foods like sweet potato disks, banana, and shredded meat in those cooler bags that come with the medela pump!

So we just got invited to spend a day in another city (about an hour's drive from our home) in December with family. I think the plan is to see a show (the Nutcracker), get some food, and maybe go on a trolly ride and do some other wintery-events.

I want to go, but I'm also nervous! Xander will be 9.5 months at that time, so I'm not sure what his schedule for napping and eating will look like. Currently at 8 months he needs 3 naps, nurses ~5 times a day, and eats 1-2 meals of solids. I'm hoping at that 9.5 months, he might be napping 2x/day and eating 2-3 meals of solids, and probably nursing just the same, though I'm not sure.

So... when you go out and about with your infant, how do you handle naps and food and nursing?? Advice needed, please! :)
