I never let him walk! If he is annoying about going in the seat, then I put him in the basket. If we are at the mall or something extended I am a sucker and get one of the fire truck carts or something. He doesn't tolerate the stroller very long.

@sorrycharlie: LO always wants to " run around" at target (which DH started as well so I hear you!). Our compromise has been that if she is a good listener while we get our list, when we are done she can get down and walk on her own or run holding my hand back to the checkout. We are usually on the far side of the store so she has a little time to get it out of her system.

My son loves those smaller shopping carts or baskets, he'll wheel it around and he helps me shop, I give him a "list" which is just scribbles on paper and he helps.

I've never really had an issue with my DS and shopping, sure, it's easier to go alone, but I don't usually have the option. I always ask him to either carry/push the basket or carry something or get things off of the shelves so that he helps. The best is when we are in a store with mini shopping carts, he looooves to push them.

My son gets a kick out of sitting in the actual basket of the cart (not the seat) and playing with the stuff in the cart. I just use the underneath area for stuff he can't play with. It actually works pretty well.

LO (almost 2) doesn't sit in shopping carts unless they are cars. Definitely something LO2 will get used to, but I can't go back in time, so mostly we talk about what I need and how close he needs to be to me. If he stops to look at something, I usually will say "you can look for 10 seconds and then we need to go" (works maybe 70% of the time). I try to make it light and fun, because getting in a battle of wills never works.

But then if it all fails, I carry a screaming toddler through Target. Or I tickle.

@sorrycharlie: I'm having the same issue and it's my DH's fault too! He lets her walk or ride in the crazy carts with the steering wheels. Now when I take her she screams "special cart!!!" the whole time. I can't handle that giant cart so we're sort of at a standoff :bummed:

I've never let him walk in the store, so I haven't had this problem yet. But I do have to have cookies in my purse because every time we shop he says more cookie, even if we had a snack at home right before. That can cause a meltdown.

If I know we're going somewhere that I'm not going to let her walk, I try and get her excited about something specific we're going to do there. so like target I'll say 'we're going into target and we can get a snack at Starbucks and we can pick out a new book' or whatever and then as I'm putting her in the cart I keep talking about it so she's all excited and forgets that she's pissed at having to be in the cart. I also don't let her feet hit the ground if she's going in the cart. Pick her up from the carseat and directly into the cart. Once those little feet hit the ground, forget it lol.

@sorrycharlie: ugh!!!! Same issue here. I usually bribe her with snacks and drinks and sometimes let her sit in the back of the cart, but then she tries to stand up and gets in trouble. I usually just go as fast as possible while she screams. Sometimes those carts with steering wheels are a hit

It gets worse, my 2yo can unbuckle some of the belts and climb out herself. And she is pretty much stronger than me so I can't force her back in.

The only helpful thing I've found is going first thing in the morning (I always go to the grocery store at 7-8am). That early she isn't tired or hungry and can sit still for a longer time.

So far it hasn't occurred to her that she could walk- I've only ever put her in the stroller or in the cart (15 months and only walking for a month and a half now). I dread the day she realizes it's an option!

But even in the cart I'm the mon opening the package of mum mums that I haven't bought yet to shut her up.

My DD (2 years) wants to walk at target. Which is fine if we aren't gettting much, but when I have a lot to get I can't corral her and drag the cart!

She screeeeeammed today in the store because I wouldn't let her get down. Like, a possessed, animal like growl scream. I was mortified but, we need food! I bribed her with bunny crackers.
