@pastemoo: lol that's awesome!! I was really shocked when she wanted more of the peas. I hate them but my husband likes them so, maybe that's it? Definitely keep feeding him things that you like and ate while pregnant. Maybe that's the key!

@mediagirl: lol. he eats his bib, too. I gave him mangoes today and he ate almost the whole jar--the whole BIG jar of stage two. He had never even eaten a whole tiny jar (stage one) before that.
I guess I just have to give him food that I like and ate while pregnant?

We started off by putting her in her high chair, putting a new "food" bib on her and letting her sit there playing with a toy while we ate. Then we started offering her some purees on a spoon. She is still more interested in eating her bib than what's on the spoon but last night she actually showed some interest in the peas I offered her.

@chopsuey119: I needed to hear that. I was pretty stressed when the doc told me I needed to try harder.
@junebugmama: I should really just introduce spices like I introduced other stuff--then I can really have more fun with it and he may eat more.

We started (maybe around 5 months?) with finger foods that I would hold and he would mouth (at first he'd suck, and later he started bite/chewing). At first he was really into this, but he seemed to be losing interest. Then I gave him applesauce and he was in love with it, so I decided to give into 'traditional' and go with mush (even though I wanted to do more of a BLW style). So at 6 months I started giving single-grain baby cereal (but nice stuff from the health food store) plus purees of the veggies that I had, at 5 months, let him gnaw on. He was Mr. Puree, happy-to-be-spoon-fed baby for about 3 weeks and then all of a sudden one day he didn't like that anymore and sortof refused to eat until I gave him finger foods (toast strip). And since then it's been more of a mixture: he'll usually eat finger foods for breakfast and lunch, but for dinner he likes us to feed him. When we feed him we feed him a variety of ways, popping bits of food into his mouth with our fingers, spoon feeding mushy stuff, and fork-feeding tiny bits he can chew with his little gums. He seems to like almost everyhing now, even things that he rejected many times (such as avacado). And we are surprised that he likes food that we have cooked with all the spices that we normally use (for example, last night was fajitas: spicy and all!).

@pastemoo: yep! she eats well. there are days she eats less than others, but i've learned not to stress over it.
just remember that your LO gets all the nutrients he needs from breast milk and formula during his first year.
solids are just for practice and fun.
my pediatrician told me LO should be eating X # of times and X ounces each meal and it really stressed me out!
I would keep offering your LO healthy and yummy options and if he eats, great! If not, he'll eat one of these days. :)

@Baby Boy Mom: Ohh. I guess that makes sense since when I was pregnant I had lots of spices and while nursing I eat spicy stuff too. It could definitely be that...

@pastemoo: I saw what you said about complexity and being nervous. Don't be. Stay away from the big ticket allergies, like nuts, but you don't have to dumb it down. I think that's why american children only like mac and cheese and chicken nuggets.

I never edited foods for our oldest one. He ate what we ate (unless it was spicy) I may have organized it differently, fajitas for instance was a tortilla cut into fours, and chicken and veggies separate with salsa and sour cream as dip. He's 5 now and ate alligator last week :) and also loves spicy food.

@pastemoo: I get that. When I was cooking I tried to take out LO's portion part of the way through, or before adding lots of seasonings. What ended up happening though is that he didn't really like the plain stuff, and once we let him try the "normal" food he started liking a lot more things.

FWIW My baby is HUGE (80th-90th percentile) so I am not worried about him gaining/not gaining weight with solids.

@chopsuey119: And now she eats alright? This is a big relief!

@junebugmama: Thanks. I am thinking it may be that purees are boring?

@Baby Boy Mom: I make such complex stuff with so many ingredients and I'm a little paranoid about allergies. I can try to make a simpler version of everything I make...

@glimmersnaps: LOL plate grabs. I wonder!

@c.sassy: I have been trying purees and simple foods for 9 weeks now--but not daily. His disinterest made me not want to try very hard. Now that he's past 6 months the doctor wants me to try harder.

We just kept offering things. It took a couple of week for her to get the hang of actually eating whatever slid off the spoon into her mouth. The first thing she really liked was prunes.

I agree about feeding from my plate. He wants what I have. His first bite actually came from a plate grab at around 5 months. He hated purees and preferred to have control over what he ate. So he wouldn't eat if I fed him but would help himself to a big fistful or whatever it was. It was messy, but he ate pretty well.

We did BLW, so just introduced different fruit/veggies every day. I didn't worry about how much he was eating just enjoying the experience. I think it helps to keep in mind that babies won't starve themselves. He did like having what we were having though.

LO didn't start liking solids until she turned 1. Can't force a baby to eat so I just offered lots of different things. Made puree's, soups, gave her pieces of food, etc.
I cringe when I think about all the food I wasted :P

I let him try anything on my plate (obviously using common sense) I have found that purees don't work for him, so little foods make more sense. If he wants to try something, I let him. We've found that he likes more veggies than fruits (pears and peaches = gag reflex)

How did you introduce foods to your LO? What age?
How long did it take for your LO to like solids?

My LO is 6 months and I was told that he needs to eat more food. Unfortunately he pretty much hates solids except carrots and pears. He will eat those as finger foods or purees and still in trivial quantities.

Any advice on introducing solids to your LO? How do you get him/her to eat enough?
