I gave up and started putting our dogs outside at meal times. If you ask C "Do we throw our food to the dogs?" he grins ear to ear and shakes his head no. And then throws them something. GAHHHHH!!!!

@rahlyrah: we have an open concept floor plan but I still don't let the dog in the kitchen unless I'm feeding him. He was trained that way before we had kids and it makes a huge difference now. However, I can't always keep DD from giving him food outside of the kitchen ;-)

If food drops by accident we let the dog eat it. But if LO drops food on purpose she gets one warning and if she does it again meal time is over. Usually when she gets to the point of dropping it she's not hungry any more anyway.

We usually say "that food is for you, not for Zumi (or dog)." If it's something he doesn't want then we ask him to put it on his plate instead of throw it on the ground. We also taught him to say "no, Zumi" when Zumi is bugging him for food. My son is really good at listening but my dog is not!

Before I had LO, my dogs were the best behaved dogs in the whole world. They knew not to beg at the dining table and would voluntarily go to their beds when we served dinner. Now LO is here, they are getting naughtier and naughtier! It's a combination of not being walked as often, me being a lot more frazzled and less in control generally and LO throwing her food! They circle her highchair like furry sharks at mealtimes and, although they go away as soon as they are asked to, they are back within a few minutes trying their luck. LO has learned that dangling her food from her highchair makes them come to her and jump up...... the other day, DH saw her dangle a bit of food and both dogs started licking it frantically. DD then put the food in her mouth - he couldn't get to her in time! Agh!

@mediagirl: I could have written this same thing!

my dog is HORRIBLE. and he's on a diet, so he's always looking for something. when he's in the yard he literally eats half the grass like a damn goat. so he's always right in LO's face while she eats.

sometimes I do have to gate him into the hallway because he's just out of control. but some days he listens and goes and lays on his bed! he stares and is up like a shot if she does drop food, but we're working on it..we have some dominance issues anyway. he doesn't listen to jack that I say to him.

Baby gate in kitchen doorway keeps the dog out. Our Boston terrier has horrible food allergies and he gets pretty sick if he eats people food, and of course he will eat anything and everything. So he just cannot be in the kitchen/dining room when LO is eating.

After one of our dogs passed away, we started training the other dog to sit in her bed during mealtimes. We have an open concept home and I wouldn't lock her in a room during meals because really she is part of our family. So, we may have to tell her 5 times to get back in her bed but now it has become a routine. Old dogs can learn new tricks. :) Our biggest problem was our dog is a beggar so we had to do something.

If there's throwing then we get her down from the high chair. But some dog-feeding is inevitable. Actually now that she's bigger she gets kibble out of the dog bowl and "feeds" it to the dog. YUCK.

@rahlyrah: I don't know about your dogs, but if I lock my dog up while we are home he just barks anyway, which would be even more distracting. :( Only giving him one or two pieces at a time might be the better option.

I'm not looking forward to this. As of now, I don't think C has put it together that throwing food off the highchair= the dog coming and eating it. It helps that we have her in a hook on chair at the counter, so she can't seem the dog as well, but I know it's only a matter of time.

Keeping the dog out of the room would work, if that's a possibility, I guess, but he does clean up the floors... We just have one big kitchen/living area so there is no way to block him anyway.

I start with a few pieces on her tray so she can feed herself. If she starts to throw food, I say, "in your mouth please." If she continues, I take away the food and give her one at a time to feed herself. If it keeps going, I feed her, which she dislikes. I have to literally tell her with every bite "in your mouth," but she's caught on (to our dog's dismay).
