I make a big effort to stay on top of the paper flow so there isn't really anything that needs to be organized. Junk goes into the recycling bin immediately, bills get paid online immediately (and wherever possible, put on auto), and anything that really needs to be saved, or for whatever reason I want DH to deal with it, goes on DH's desk. Stuff that needs to be saved, DH puts into our collapsible file folder.

@regberadaisy: we have this wall organizer from ikea in our kitchen which is where I open the mail.
http://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/90198030/
we labeled each pocket with a category (to be paid/reviewed/filed away) and put a colored Manila folder in each pocket. When I open mail, I immediately put envelopes and other unnecessary paper in recycling bin, anything with personal info goes right in the shredder and the rest gets separated into this organizer. We pay bills once a month so I don't need to organize my bills by date. On bill day, I pull the bills folder out and my bills are all in one place. Once paid, I put them in the "to be filed" pocket if it's something we need to keep. Most go directly to the shredder since we don't keep a hard copy if its accessible online.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: where did you buy yours? I saw something similar on Pinterest using a IKEA magazine rack. I might go that route in the office....

Our system is to pay it the same day, so we leave unpaid bills on the keyboard. Then they go in a pile on DH's desk and we eventually get around to filing them in the cabinet.

We have one of these. http://www.mead.com/mead/browse/product/98133?couponId=SAVE20E&cvsfa=4442&cvsfe=2&cvsfhu=3938313333&gclid=CILBm5D7l8gCFQgXHwodCU0AvA

I think I got it at Target. It's stuck right on the side of our fridge. Bills to pay go in the top slot. Paid bills and other paperwork to file go in the bottom slot.

I recycle them because we have the same couple bills due at the same time each month... so I guess I have it memorized? The others are automatic.

So we have one of those bill organizers (it's basically a metal rack with a couple of slots). As soon as the bills come in the mail, the due date gets written on the front of the envelope in sharpie. We file the bills into the rack by due date, so the very first bill we see is the one that is due soonest, and the next one due is right behind that, and so on. As soon as a bill is paid, it is removed from the rack so then we see the next bill "in line." We keep this little system in one of the cupboards in our kitchen, since we don't have an office.

Following because I literally do the exact same thing. It goes on the breakfast bar! DH isn't particular though so it really builds up sometimes.

I recycle absolutely everything immediately, unless it's something that absolutely has to be dealt with, or is for taxes. Dealt with goes on the fridge, taxes go in a folder.

@Mrs. Pen: sorry. I wasn't clear. I don't mean a filing system for long term. More how to keep it organized *until* I get around to filing it.

Right now I just dump it all on the breakfast bar and it drives DH crazy. Then when he cleans he puts it all in the office. Which drives me crazy because I don't know where stuff went.

I have a filing/folder bin divided into folders labeled with categories. The folder at the front is bills to be paid, and I have tons of other folders like house related documents, medical, work, school, etc.

I need a better system for mail that I need to sort, bills that need to be paid (there are a few like the water bill that's not auto) and other things to save for follow up.

How do you keep it organized?

I need something that's very easy, clutter free, visible but away in the office. Thanks!
