@mr.bee lol I should have been more specific.. As in no tissue or anything I can feel it with, preferably a broom or something where it can be far, far away!! And then pick it uP on a paper or something!

We don't have many coachroaches around here that I see, but any other kid of bug if DH isn't home I usually kill with a shoe and then get toliet paper and flush it just to be sure it's really gone! I hate bugs so much.

I use the closest thing to me - shoe, paper towels, tissue paper, mail, etc. then toss it in the trash can.

I always call my husband to do it. I think the worst part is that they act like they're dead and then when you go to pick them up with a paper towel they start moving. So awful!

I scream for DH. He will usually go get a papertowel, or a shoe, whatever is close.

When I lived by myself, I would spray him, and leave him for days until I was 100% sure that he was dead. Then I would use an oven mit and paper towel (so I didn't have to feel the squish or crunch) to pick him up, and flush him.

Oh God, I HATE them! Just moved into a new place in Brooklyn a few weeks ago and have seen two giant ones. Luckily, my husband was home both times and he got them with the spray. I have heard that stepping on them can release their egg sack (gross!) and result in more roaches, so I always spray.

@MediaGirl: I have likened the bug spray to *iocane powder* (a la Princess Bride) . . . the lil fluckers just seem to build up an immunity to everything. Except flip flops . . . or any other blunt-force trauma-inducing object. :P

Paper towel over them and then whack with a shoe or book. I can't stand the crunch noise so I have found the paper helps. Also good for the mess.

DH sprays and then puts the bug spray can over the roach. You then get rid of it later.

I hate roaches but living on the coast you have to deal with them I think.

I scream at them--loudly enough to (attempt to) stun them--while also screaming for DH. Once he arrives on the scene, his preferred *weapon* is a flip flop.

I used to try to spray them, but let's be realistic here . . . we're talking about a species that can survive nuclear fallout.

Cockroaches are so gross. The worst thing about killing them with a shoe is you get to hear and feel the crunch. When I lived in Savannah, we had them bad. I bought tons of bottles of bug spray, extra strength. Those buggers are tricky, though. I would have my can of spray on the coffee table, see one and start spraying. I swear some of those jerks enjoyed it. I'd spray, it would fly into a corner. I'd spray again and it wouldn't move. Are you drinking it??? Finally a third spray would knock it out. Now that I think about it, that apartment was probably pretty gross with all the bug spray everywhere...

*tactics used not recommended for homes with small children.

EWWWWW. I haven't seen a roach since my first studio apartment on the UES out of college. It was SO GROSS there. I think I just ran away and hoped it would just die on its own.

I haven't seen any roaches here so far but we get stink bugs. Now those gross me out! They look so prehistoric. And they fly! Good thing they're slow crawlers and easy to catch. I crush it with a tissue and down the toilet it goes. If husband is around then I make him do it.

I'd like to say "with a baseball bat", but a) that's a bad idea and b) we don't own a baseball bat. We use shoes or books, then paper towel in which we squish the living daylights out of the suckers. Our area is horrible with roaches, though our apartment isn't bad.

I just killed a huge one... I used an old book and ninja'd the cockroach while it was just hanging out in the bathroom.

I thought it was dead, and was doing my little victory dance... but then the undead cockroach started dragging its body along the floor, leaking fluid as it used a single leg to try and drag its corpse to safety. So I did what any real man would do, and grabbed it with some tissue paper and flushed it.

We've had more insects in the house recently (ants and cockroaches mostly), so I put out some traps and that should hopefully take care of the problem. Still, so disgusting.

How do you guys kill those huge cockroaches that are the size of the palm of your hand? I need some more techniques that don't require me to sacrifice an old book to smush the bug.
