I've always been told at the salons "long" = anything past the shoulders. I've never been charged more for a haircut, but for color yes. I've even been double charged once because my hair was "extra-long and they used 2 times the normal hair color or something like that.

@Espion: omigosh! Thinning out sounds horrific. Once straight my hair is so thin.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I also wanted to add that I have never been charged extra for a cut/style due to length, but I have been charged extra for highlights due to length.

My hair is half way down my back/just below my bra clasp. I consider it to be long. I agree with @aprk: that anything below the shoulders is considered long.

In Texas, women haircut pricing is dependent on hair length. It sucks and isn't cheap!!

My hair is long and thick and I've been advised to give hair stylists a heads up when making an appointment because they generally block me in for a longer time in the chair. I'm not sure if I've ever been upcharged for it though...

Then again, I haven't had my hair cut in an actual salon in more than 2 years. (So many bad experiences...not many people know what to do with my hair and they always try to thin it out, which I hate, beyond hate.) I usually trim the ends myself with scissors meant for trimming hair...

I would say anything firmly below shoulders is long

My hair reaches my bra clasp and I would also consider it to be long.

I am no expert, but it sounds long to me. My hair is also mid-back (to the bottom of my bra clasp), and it is considered *long*.

Expert hair stylist bees please weigh in.

I go to JC Penney's styling salon because they do my hair exactly how I ask (wash, blow dry, flat iron) and they only take one customer at a time so I am usually in and out worth 70-90 minutes. Depending on the stylist I am surcharged for hair length.

Typically, I get this extra fee when black stylists do my hair. I have a fantastic white stylist who doesn't charge me and one time a mixed race (Latina and Black) stylist with similar hair texture didn't charge me.

My hair reaches the bottom of my bra clasp and falls past my shoulders, mid arm when straight. Is hair length subject to race?

Edit: used Ms. LipGloss' bra clasp wording. I need to read more. Lol
