I've never measured her solids, but rather let her eat until she was done. She's always gotten solids 3x/day, but until recently only ate maybe 1-1.5oz total. Now she probably eats anywhere from 4-8 oz every day.

I gave her food, and let her decide how much to eat. If she finished the bowl and still wanted more, I put more in. Still do at 14 months.

@winniebee: Does he seem content after you feed him? It seems like M didn't really care about solids at first, but then suddenly she was super interested in them and it seemed like I couldn't get the next spoonful to her fast enough. That's when I upped them some. I was always afraid to feed her too much of the solids (still am somewhat) since they say milk is still # 1 at this point, so I just make sure she still nurses as frequently and seems to be taking in the same amount as before.

@jennylynn: Ha! My LO slaps everything so that wouldn't be a good cue for more food!

I always nurse before offering solids so I know she's getting enough milk first. I just followed her cues. If she still seemed eager to eat more (opening her mouth, watching us eat, saying "mmmmmm" with each bite etc.) I offered more. She eventually becomes distractable and acts uninterested, so I figure that's her cue that she's full. Now, she lets me know when she wants more by slapping her hand on the tray of her highchair!

we started solids at 6 months with just one meal a day which was dinner, then waited a month and added one more meal. I dont think you can know for sure that its time to increase it b ut you can try it an dthen see if that makes your LO drink less milk then you know they arent ready

I want to make sure LO still drinks an appropriate amount of milk, but also wondering how / when I should up his solids intake. He's been getting 3 (small) meals for about a month (he's 6.5 months). Cereal/oatmeal at breakfast, 2 oz or so of puree at lunch, and 1-2 oz of puree at dinner. We've been giving him some finger foods to explore but he doesn't really get anything when he eats. How did you know when to feed mroe?
