wow, sounds exactly like what's going on with my LO. She's 7 months and just recently started taking longer naps here and there. And the past 2 days she's been only sleeping for 15-20 min for her first nap.

Her night sleep sounds exactly the same as your LO too, does your LO fall asleep on her own?

@Mrs. Bee: Same, Tyler used to take 4-5 thirty minute naps. Now he's taking 2-3 naps usually of an hour in length, sometimes longer!

@jennylynn: I know, I'm surprised he can do it and sleep well at night! It started because group nap at daycare is 1-3 and he usually sleeps 1-3.....and then won't nap after that at daycare since we don't nap him after 5. He gets a little fussy between 6-6:30 but once we start bedtime routine it's fine. He's almost 7 months.

olive dropped to 2 naps at 8 months after we nap trained and her naps got longer. before she was taking cat naps and needed 3 even 4 naps a day. sounds like your lo is at a good time and age to drop to 2 naps. charlie dropped to 2 naps at 9 months too.

@winniebee: wow that's a long stretch! DST messed up our schedule for a couple of weeks, so she was having trouble making it until her 7 p bedtime. Now that she's adjusted, maybe a longer before bed waketime would be good. I have a four day weekend this week, so I think I may give 2 naps a shot! I'm nervous. I don't know how to initiate it or what to expect! Any tips? :)

@jennylynn: woah, that's awesome! maybe she only needs 2 naps then? i find that my son now does best with a longer stretch before bedtime (of 3 hours) and he does really well with 4 hours. His bedtime is also 7 and at daycare he is up from his last nap no later than 3.

@winniebee: I guess I haven't really paid attention to the total amount of sleep in 24 hours. She usually sleeps about 12 hours a night and *was* napping between 1 1/2-2 hours a day. Now that her naps have been getting longer, she's napping anywhere from 2-4 hours a day!

I have found that when healthy, my son needs just a certain amount of sleep daily. He only sleeps 10 hours overnight and is best with 3 hours worth of naps during the day. If he sleeps more than 10 hours overnight (rare) he naps less. If he gets those 3 hours from 2 naps, he doesn't have a 3rd. Most babies get more sleep, but he just never has slept more than 13-14 hours in a 24 hour period.

Have you seen a pattern in how much sleep your LO gets over a 24 hour period?

DD started with a schedule around 7ish months with two naps. Before that there was no real schedule to speak of.

Current (and has been this way for about 2 months now)

Wake- 7:30am. Nurse, eat, play
Nap 1- Starts between 9:30-10 goes until 12 ish
Wakes up to nurse, eat, play etc
Nap 2- 3pm-5pm give or take 30 mins on either side
Wakes up to play, eat dinner, play more, bath, nurse
Bed 7:30 to 8pm, Sleeps through the night.

Hope that helps!

LO is 8 month old, and has routinely been taking 3 3o-45 minute naps since she was about 4 months old. She's never really been a good napper, but she'd occasionally take a random 1 hour+ nap here and there. Well for the past week-week 1/2 she's been taking at least one 1 hour or longer nap a day, sometimes 2. She even took an unheard of 2 hour morning nap one day this week! She hasn't established a predictable nap schedule yet, so it's still kind of a guessing game with which nap will be the long one, or how long they will be. But I feel like since she's started taking longer naps, that it's been a little bit more difficult to get her to bed at night, and she's seems to be in a pretty light, restless sleep for the first couple of hours. Most nights she wakes back up an average of 1-3 times shortly after going to bed for the night, before finally staying asleep (her bedtime is 7). Does this mean it's getting time to drop a nap? What is the smoothest way to transition?
