Baby A is teething right now and our ped said Tylenol once or twice a day for a few days is fine. We've stopped giving it during the day and only at bedtime. I'm trying to switch it back and forth with Advil - ped advised it as they both work differently. I'd prefer to give her nothing, but the tablets don't seem to be doing much and mama (and baby) need to sleep.

thanks for all the replies. L wasn't crying but he was really whining a lot and not himself. I could have holded off but i figured just because he is not crying, doesn't mean he was not in pain. I don't know. I find it so hard to tell. His bottom teeth came in and other than lots of drool, i had no idea when he was teething, i just noticed they were there one day! maybe i will hold off longer next time and see how he is doing.

i was just thinking this very thing after baby girl was crying off and on for 2 hours.... i gave her tablets, cuddles, tried to nurse, etc, but nothing was working... if we have a similar night tonight, i'm going for the tylenol. it killed me to see her cry like that because she NEVER does that. :(

ds is 8 months. when he was cutting FOUR top teeth last month, we gave him advil at nighttime if he was still running a fever. he was fighting naps like crazy so we knew he was hurting and overtired.

I use advil when all else fails (distraction, snack, nursing session, etc.) If he wakes up early and screaming and won't go back down easily that usually means teeth.

We've done it quite a bit in the last few weeks. He's getting his teeth all at once right now at 10 months. He just got two and I can feel 4 more that are coming in and are about to break the gum. He is absolutely miserable and has been ramming his fist into his mouth while screaming. That's our big indicator that he needs something. Once it kicks in, he's back to my sweet little boy!

Usually with teething, he is fine if he's chewing on something (he loves an ice cube in that mesh feeder thing). But if none of his teethers are working and he's still miserable, we'll give Tylenol. We've only done it once.

@hilsy85: you're lucky, this has happened several times for us :( the tooth would cut through that night or shortly thereafter. I might try the boiron camilia for during the day if I think it's bugging him; I'm going to do some more Google research on it!

I gave LO Advil twice for teething pain, both at bedtimes (a month or so apart) this was after trying all other soothing techinque and knowing she was in pain. This round she seems to be coping much better with the teeth so we haven't had to give her any.

@hilsy85: What is boiron camilia? I've never heard of it.

@scg00387: this would also be my threshhold--for me to give tylenol he would need to be crying in pain, which luckily has not really happened. If he just seems fussy/whiny, I would try boiron camilia, which we have given twice for what we think was teething pain.

I give it if he is hysterical and nothing else has resolved it; nursing, rocking, teething tablets. If he is still upset I give him some.

I think it's a judgement call. We give ibuprofen for teething when she's had two or more consecutive nights of bad sleep, crying for no reason and teething tablets do not work and I know she's teething.

I've only given it two or three times. I give Hyland's tablets first and if he just seems super upset even though he's fed and not super tired, I give it. I can tell when it's above and beyond.

I've given it a few times before bed when it is clearly interfering with my daughter's ability to sleep. In our case, she does pretty well with sleep, even when she's teething, so we have not had any issues with making it a habit.

I've only given L Tylenol 2X in his life - at his 4 and 6 months shots (he is 8.5m). Today he seemed to be whining/chewing/biting more than ever. And i can see his top 2 teeth coming in. So i gave Tylenol before bed. I just don't want this to become a habit. How can you tell when it is appropriate to give or not?
