I wear fitted stuff because the flows stuff just looked like I was big, not pregnant. I'm usually not a fan of fitted but now I have a reason to show it off!

I wore mostly fitted clothes. None of my clothes were tight, but I like emphasizing my bump. I wore a lot of the ruched tees from Motherhood. They are super flattering!

Definitely generational. I liked mine fitted I didn't want anyone wondering ! By the end it made no difference... I could've worn a tarp and people would've known :)

I like fitted maternity clothes! Sometimes I don't even like wearing a coat because I feel like I just look big and not pregnant. I think a round pregnant belly is so cute and I like that this is a time when you don't have to feel self conscious about a belly.

I think it's partly generational and partly situational with that mom and the teen daughter. My mom is always telling me how nice I look and how cute my belly is, but the first time I wore a tight shirt that showed it off, she was like 'whoa, you're really showing off that belly!' I think women of a certain age aren't used to that attitude (and clothes like that probably weren't available to them anyway.) I think that's why a lot of older women are confused by maternity photo shoots and pregnant ladies in bikinis.

@Cherrybee: Hahaha! That's exactly my opinion!

Doesn't excuse it, but I bet her mom is embarrassed. Probably thinks that everyone will think she failed because her daughter will be a teen mom, and doesn't want attention drawn to it. Or she thinks that her daughter should be ashamed for getting pregnant and that it would be more appropriate to hide the bump. Which would all be very sad, actually.

I'm not pregnant, but when I was, I wore stuff that showed my bump, but a tad loose. I was pregnant in the summer, so wearing clothes that hugged me would have been really uncomfortable. I know what her mom meant though. My little cousin was pregnant and wore NO maternity clothes. Just her old clothes tight. Not flattering at all.

i'm so looking forward to showing off the bump once it decides to pop out. wearing anything majorly tent-like would not look right on my body (i'm barely 5'1").

however, right now, while i'm still in the "looks like i just ate too much" stage, i'm mostly wearing looser sweaters that are long enough to hide my unbuttoned waistband.

I prefer fitted stuff! I prefer that generally in life though, pregnant or not. I also think it's a generational thing that maternity clothes should be lose. When my MIL sees me wearing non-maternity t-shirts that are tight over the tummy, she always says "DH, you need to buy her some bigger shirts!" But um, even in an adult medium t-shirt, the shoulder area is huge on me...if I wore an XL like she seems to think I should, I would look like a shapeless cow.

I usually dress to hide my tummy, so during pregnancy I showed it off. It was big and beautiful and fantastic, and I wore a ton of adorable bump showing clothing. That's a real generational thing, though. My mother said a lot of times that in her day the clothing wasn't flattering at all, just big and tent like and meant to try and hide things. I can see how a mother who was embarrassed by her teen daughter's pregnancy might disapprove of pretty much everything at Motherhood.

aww that's really sad. Even if she is a teen mom, it's sad. No mother wishes for their teenager to get pregnant, but if I were in that situation, after getting over the shock, I would be excited/happy for her even if she wasn't keeping the baby and wouldn't criticize her...at least I hope that's how I'd react :-P

I loved wearing really fitted clothing that showed off the bump - but hugged the RIGHT curves. I had some love handles lol and some hugged all the curves instead of only the bump lol and my butt was pretty much jello-consistency so I tried to hide that and firm it up a bit ;)

The whole exchange was really strange and it made me kinda question if my clothing choices were trashy, since my goal has always been to try to accentuate the bump. I determined quickly that of course not, given that they cover up everything and just subtly accentuate (like one top is a very flowy tunic, with a ribbon that gets tied in a bow, to make it more empire-waisted. Cutest. Top Ever.)

I don't like it when people stretch super tight tank tops over their bumps and you can see every stretch mark they have, but honestly, it was 115 where I live this summer so whatever you could do to keep cool was totally necessary!!

I think I've spent much of my adult life trying to hide any belly pooch I may have, so I am definitely not that comfortable wearing fitted stuff around my tummy. That being said, I think it's much more flattering to wear fitted tops now that I'm pregnant, so I do wear some form-fitting tops. But I don't want to buy too many because I know as soon as baby comes out, I'll want to hide the post-partum belly and fitted tops won't get worn again (at least for a very long time).
I think you're right about the old generation of thinking and seeing the bump though. It's like obscene or too in-your-face for some older people.

I don't mind showing mine off, but I'm a married adult. If I was a teen, I'd probably try to hide, lol! None of my stuff is skin tight but I have some more form fitting tops.

I have a bump shaped tummy anyway (its just where II put my weight) and I've spent my whole life trying to hide it. I can't wait to show my baby bump off once its here - it'll be showy offy all the way for me!

I was in the maternity store today and bought a couple of super cute tops that really emphasize my bump (which isn't very big yet, I'm only 19 weeks). I like trying to emphasize my bump, I want everyone to know I'm pregnant, not just really full from a cheeseburger at lunch!

While I was in there, there was a really rude woman there with her daughter. She kept telling her daughter that she looked "trashy" and that the clothes were too tight, that you aren't supposed to be able to see that you have a bump, etc.

I was pretty offended by her tone and the way she was speaking to her daughter and the store manager, who was trying really hard to help them find stuff they could both be happy with (the daughter was 16-17).

I don't know if the mom didn't want her daughter's bump to be noticeable because of her age (and I'm assuming her age, based on seeing her, I didn't like see her driver's license or anything, she just looked 16-17). Or maybe it was a generational thing, my mom definitely had told me a hundred times about how she had to wear stuff that looked like tents when she was pregnant, that that was just what was out there.

How do you like your maternity clothes to fit? Do you opt for hide-the-bump stuff, emphasize-the-bump, or something else? Nothing I wear is tight by ANY means, I'm waaaay too self-conscious to wear form-fitting stuff and it's just uncomfortable to have restricting clothing on my belly, but the stuff I wear are like empire-waist style tops, flowy tunic tops, and typical maternity slacks and jeans, with the full panel, which gives me a cute little round belly :)

Just curious to hear others' style choices!
