DH makes the best burgers.

We use 90% lean ground beef, minced garlic, minced vidalia/sweet onions, salt, pepper, garlic salt and mix together.

We almost always do sauted onions and mushrooms at toppers. When we're feeling bad we add bacon & melted cheddar cheese. Which he adds at the very end of the grilling.

Yum.

@Smurfette: yeah baby!!

I season my meat with s&p, add an egg, Worcestershire sauce and if I'm feeling extra saucy, I split the burger in half and add some cut up cooked bacon and shredded cheese... then put the top on and grill!

@FutureMrsMcK: I love the chopped bacon idea, yummy! I'm making burgers for the 4th so I'm going to try this. I usually saute chopped onion and garlic and add that to the ground beef, I find that the sauteed onions make it even juicier than raw. I also add Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, a little cayenne, and chili powder and egg.

I use Adobo seasoning and add a bit of bbq sauce. Before I place them in the pan I add fresh cracked pepper and sea salt on bith sides.

@Smurfette: I'm with you! Or we could drive to @FutureMrsMcK 's house.

Just kidding, thanks to all for your tips which have really covered everything from minimum to max effort and everything in between. And @looch I didn't ever think about that but now if my burgers continue to suck I can blame it on forces outside my control.

I found the meat is the critical factor, it can't be ground too finely. I couldn't make a good burger while living abroad because the ground beef is ground too fine and I didn't have a kitchenaid to grind my own.

Drive to restaurant, find parking spot, get seated, order a beer, then a burger and fries. Cause I am a big believer the side makes the meal

Season your meat, don't overpack the patties and when you cook them, don't squish them.

Season your meat well - salt and pepper at least. I always get compliments on my burgers and the secret is I always add cream, worcestershire and minced red onion to the raw meat - just a couple of tablespoons of each. Keeps the meat really super juicy and the onion gives it great flavor.

Also, don't overcook them! :)

@FutureMrsMcK: oh my gosh. Have you taken culinary classes before? All of your meals sound ah-mazing!!

I usually add garlic, 1 egg, garlic bread crumbs and A1 for a zestier burger. Another good one is jalapeño, bacon, cheddar in the food processor and combine with the ground beef. There are a bunch of fun recipes online that I've tried but so far, those are the winners.

I made some great ones the other night--I buzzed around 6 slices of bacon in the food processor until it was ground, then added the ground beef, some minced garlic, Steak and Chop seasoning and S&P and buzzed it a few more times. I dressed the burger with White cheddar cheese (sliced from a block, not the plastic-wrapped kind, tomato, sauteed mushrooms, and garlic aioli on homemade buns.

ETA: Before you put them in the pan/on the grill make a dimple in the center of the patty, don't press down and only flip them once.

How do you make your burgers? I need some serious help. I just form ground beef into parties and voila, mediocre burgers. What should I be adding to or doing to the meat?
