@Boogs: Btw, these are the ice pack pads I'm talking about:

http://www.amazon.com/Medline-Perineal-Cold-Packs-Count/dp/B000K6TF1Y/

You crack it and then shake to start the coolant. Drizzle a little water. Stack between a regular pad (for absorbancy) and some witch hazel pads.

My hospital also gave me a sitz bath to use (with warm water) which helped a lot. In the beginning I used it 2-3 times per day.

Ah, mem'ries...

At work, we pull open the back end of a nb diaper and fill it with ice. Then use the closures to close it up. :)

I took a giant pad from the hospital, cut in strips, soaked it in water and froze them. You could also just use puffy pads (not like the always infinity which are the shizz for everything but this).

I heard to do this, and didn't think much of it. The nurses did ice packs in the hospital. When I finally did it - I had no idea how uncomfortable the ice was! The padscicle was the best thing in the world. I wish I had done it sooner!

@spaniellove: my hospital did this too and I thought it was genius because of the absorbancy and because they used crushed ice so it was more comfortable and molded to me. I didn't look closely but I think they cut each diaper in half and stuffed the ice through the cut edge and then folded the cut edge over. I assume they could get 2 pads out of one diaper by doing that too.

I got thin panty liners and soaked them in water. I put a tuck pad on top and put them on a cookie sheet and froze them. They worked pretty well.

@Boogs: I never looked that closely but now that I think about it I didn't notice tape. They must have done it in a way so that they could seal it back up with the tabs? Maybe they sliced the back and folded it over? I just remember when the ice melted I could feel the squishy gel and there was never any leakage.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: It sounds worth it!

@spaniellove: I'm trying to picture how to do that, but yjt absorbency factor is brilliant!

@ElbieKay: Don't know where there is one, but I can look.

@sorrycharlie: Did the same in the hospital. I have those pads because of recommendations from here, just didn't know if they would freeze well since they are so thin. Good to know they will work!

@matador84: I've been doing the same since I got home yesterday, minus the hydrocortisone. But, the swelling isn't going down with that method. :(

in the hospital: two big pads to cover front to back. then ice pack pad. then three tucks pads in a row on that one. then dermaplast on there and on me.

at home: same deal but instead of an ice pack pad, I bought witch hazel (target brand is like, $1 and change a bottle compared to CVS' $4 and change), and poured it onto an always infinity pad. I froze those flat in the freezer and then used those!

Can you find a medical supply store? I would try to find the cold packs they gave me in the hospital. FYI they worked better if I ran a tiny bit of cold water over them because it helped propagate the coolness.

When I was in the hospital the nurses cut open the top front of a NB diaper, threw in ice, and sealed it up. It was the best to just sit on it, and no mess! I think the stuff inside just absorbed the ice as it melted.

Jumbo pads - I used the Tena pads for bladder leakage. I unwrapped and unfolded them, then I mixed some witch hazel with a little water, and soaked the pad. I folded it back up, stuck it back in the wrapper, and froze it.
They're a little stiff to unfold when they're frozen, but totally worth it.
Hope youre feeling better soon!
