Stove top. When I'm feeling fancy I'll make kettle corn by adding sugar during popping. Hmmm .... maybe tonight.

We do stovetop with a shallow-ish pan with lid. We use 1/2 cup kernals and 1/3 cup olive oil. sometimes melt butter afterwards and sprinkle Montreal steak spice/lemon pepper.

Sometimes for a treat we add 1/3 cup cane sugar when popping, making sure to move the pan alot to make kettle corn, Just have to add salt at the end to mix. Yumm!

I bought an air popper this summer because we were eating so much popcorn. My son loves it because it's so loud and the dog loves it because sometimes the popcorn flies out and whatever lands on the floor is hers.

We just do 1/4 or 1/3 a cup of kernals in a paper lunch bag in the microwave! As easy a microwave without all the crazy additives.

America's Test Kitchen never fails me. This video has helped me make perfect batches of popcorn for years - no burning, very few unpopped kernels.

http://americastestkitchen.tumblr.com/post/36683590576/the-trick-to-perfect-stovetop-popcorn

It's all about using a high smoke-point oil (canola or peanut), doing a few test kernels, then putting the rest of the kernels in *off the heat* so that the kernels get to the optimum temperature.

I used to use the stovetop method. I agree that it makes the best popcorn! However, I like to eat popcorn a lot so I bought an air popper since it doesn't require any oil. Never use microwave - the various chemicals used to cook it and coat it kind of wig me out.

i make quinn popcorn in the microwave (you pop it plain in the microwave, then add an oil, then the seasoning). it's so good, they have lots of yummy flavors, and the bags are safe. most microwave popcorn has scary stuff lining the bags, but they don't.

One year for my birthday I asked for a stove-top popcorn maker -- the metal pot with the handle that mixes the kernals around in the oil. Totally worth it and way better than that microwave stuff. I use Orville Redenbacher popcorn kernals and the same brand oil.

@Mrs. Lovejoy: I keep moving/ shaking the kernals (kind of shaking the pot by holding the handle, moving kernals back and forth) a little so they don't burn and also so they are coated in oil.

We just started making it over the stove top. We stopped eating popcorn for a while because we didn't want to eat too much of the microwave ones. I didn't realize how easy it is to make it over the stove top. We just made a batch last night using coconut oil. With a little bit of that coconut flavor, we didn't even need to add flavor on top. No more over done/burnt popcorn from the microwave! Oh and we used a pan with a glass lid and the kids loved watching the corn pop.
I'm looking for a christmas movie to watch together too. The grinch sounds like a good option.

@Mrs. Lovejoy: regular pot and lid. Pour oil in the bottom, put 2 kernels in and put the lid on. When those 2 pop, put the rest of the kernels in, cover again and stay close while the rest pop. Voila!

Tomorrow night we'll be watching How the Grinch Stole Christmas together and now that the kids are a bit older, I'd love to have a really great bowl of popcorn to enjoy as a family.

Growing up, we used to make popcorn in pots with oil - it tasted so much better that way! We also had a popcorn maker that used hot air, but it wasn't nearly as tasty. These days, we usually use microwaved popcorn... it just can't compare. Sure is a lot easier though! Kinda excited to try out stove-popped popcorn again.
