@lilyofthewest: Our DCP closes at 6pm too. In your situation I think I would ask one of the teachers at the DCP if they would be interested in taking LO back to your house when they get off work and then you can just come straight home - that way if you are running late its not a problem.

I would try to find an in home day care that will work with you. Two kids at my LOs daycare have an arrangement to stay longer hours.

My area has some local mom facebook groups. If there's one in your area posting on there could get you some leads for a flexible in home daycare, SAHM that wants to care for an additional kid, or aftercare set up.

DH is in healthcare and like you has no control over his schedule. So our solution is that I am the default daycare parent for pick up and drop off and luckily I am in charge of my schedule so it is doable. The other couples we know with two crazy schedules have nannies. In home care might be another option as the hours can be more flexible if you find a good one.

I work in healthcare as well. Because of exactly this problem I have a nanny :s childcare in general is very expensive where we are so it's "only" about $300/month more expensive than full time daycare but I have no other option and the relief of not having to worry about being late or having to "slack off early" is worth every penny.

I'm in outpatient care too - and never get to leave on time. I knew daycare pick up wouldn't be feasible for us...That's why we have a nanny. But in Chicago, the cost of a nanny (especially a nanny share) is comparable to daycare.

While my niece and nephew lived with us, we found an inhome daycare that allowed us to pay extra for late days. The kids ate dinner there and we picked them up later. Hope you are able to find a good arrangement.

@MrsLonghorn: I thought you were really on to something there. Turns out one of our two hospitals doesn't have affiliated childcare, and the other still closes at 6pm. Weird. I expect this tip will help some of the other folks watching this thread though!

@lilyofthewest: I had to change my schedule. My boss was actually really accommodating but it seems like in your line of work that may not be possible. Either a nanny to do pickup or dh changing his schedule seems like the only option!

A part time nanny for gap care/aftercare is a good thought! I might feel frustrated or silly paying someone to be available to pick up baby even when I'm actually able to do it at least half the time. But, I imagine it'd be a lot less pricey than using a nanny instead of a center.

Have you talked to your employer about this? I haven't had to deal with it yet, but I recall a court reporter that was working on a few trials I defended had her kids in daycare that closed at 6 and it was just agreed that she ALWAYS left at 5pm to get there. Even if court was running late and we were going to run over (and even if we were only going to run over 20 minutes) they always took a break at 445 so she could pack up and another court reporter came in to take over. I feel like a lot of employers would probably understand hard end times to deal with childcare.

Well, I'm recovering patients after outpatient surgeries, and about half the time there's another nurse, about half the time I'm the only one. On those days there's no one to relieve me and I *can't* leave until the patients are stable and discharged.

Sweetie doesn't get a dinner break, just lunch. He really loves his schedule as is, but if his job is willing to offer an alternate schedule (hopefully, but not certain), I think he's going to have to change it.

This isn't really an answer, but 2 of the hospitals near us have daycare centers affiliated with them/on-campus. You don't have to be a hospital employee to use it, but because they serve the hospital they have extended hours (6a-8p, I believe) and pretty much never close for holidays.

They are both managed by Bright Horizons, so maybe it is a BH thing not a hospital thing, but I would look into that if it is an option for you.

Following because I've been wondering this too (super premature as I'm only 6w along). I work a pretty standard schedule, but with my commute, I'd have to duck out before 5 in order to make a 6pm pickup time, which just isn't feasible every day (or even most days). And I'd have to leave right at 5 in order to make a 6:30 pickup, which is still pretty challenging. My DH works 12-8 every day so he wouldn't be able to help.

Curious to hear how others manage!

Can you afford a nanny for just pick up? (Wasn't sure if you meant that or that you can't afford to do one instead of daycare.) I've seen jobs like that advertised.

Maybe get an after care nanny? Someone to do the pickup every day and stay with LO until one of you gets home? A lot of daycares will give a discount if you pick up around 3 or 3:30. Or do a nanny share at your house with someone willing to stay later or flexible hours?

@lilyofthewest: We don't have family in the area either, and I think both of you may have to approach your bosses and ask about a different schedule.

I do drop off and pick up on my own, but the few times I have a late work event and can't get LO, DH has to talk to his boss ahead of time and get off early. Last year, I had to get my first period covered because DH was out of town and I had to do drop off at our old daycare near our house--they didn't open till 7 am and I leave for work at 6:45 am to make it on time.

Since this will be a regular occurance, you guys will have to work out a schedule where maybe M,W, and F DH goes in earlier and leaves earlier, and Tues,Thurs you leave early. If you aren't the first in your office to have a baby, your manager should be used to working with parents.

Our kiddo is still cooking, but, I'm starting to agonize over how to handle childcare when sweetie and I are both back at work.

I work in outpatient healthcare, theoretically on a 9-5 schedule. However, I am actually only free to leave when we're done seeing our last patient, which typically ranges anywhere from 3pm to 7:45pm depending on how the day went. I can usually make a decent guess about when I'll be off by the early afternoon, but complications and emergencies can change it up until the last patient has actually walked out of the building.

Sweetie works a funky compressed schedule -- 10am - 8pm Tuesday through Friday, plus 9am - 5pm every other Monday.

We're stumped on daycare. The overwhelming majority of centers and in-home providers have their latest pickup at 6pm, a small handful at 6:30pm.

We don't have family in the area to help, and the cost of a nanny would be really difficult for us to budget. How do other people with non 9-5 schedules make childcare work?

What am I missing bees?
