I agree with @Finfan:, my chart wasn't really clear until I started taking my temp vaginally

I would try vaginally temping. I found temping to be too much of a pain for me to stick with and preferred to use OPKs once I figured out a narrow range for when my ovulation dates were falling.

I always wake up in the middle of the night and find it doesn't really affect anything. I try to take at the same time every morning, which is what seems to make the biggest difference  You'll get the hang of it!

I did the same as Crystal, set an alembic and go back to sleep. I've also heard vaginal temps can be a lot more stable but I didn't want to switch after having months and months of oral temp data. Laatly, after 3-4 months, I knew my patterns well enough that I could adjust the temp a bit to accommodate for irregular sleep. FF has options for that - the open circles, the unconnected circles, etc

I do the same as Crystal. I set an alarm every single day for 5:45 and take my temp, then go back to sleep if I don't have to get up. I never have issues falling back asleep. I don't temp during my period for mess reasons but also because it gives me a break from the madness. I suggest that :)

Thanks for the advice everyone. I am going to buy a better thermometer for next cycle. I am not getting much variation with the one I have and it's making me nervous that perhaps I didn't ovulate. But I'm fairly sure I did because of the pain I had, and my doctor even said it was ovulation. My temps have been higher since before ovulation, but not by that much. But I really think it's either user error or the thermometer.

I also set an alarm, and if I woke up in the middle of the night, I just tried to not move much. I think as long as you don't get up, you should be fine after 3 hours sleep

As long as I didn't get out of bed in the middle of the night, I didn't count it as a wake-up and would just temp when I woke up for the day. Depending on the day of the week, that was a different time. My chart wasn't as pretty as a lot of them online, but still clear enough to see the thermal shift. I would suggest getting a real BBT though, they're cheap and you can find them at any pharmacy.

I would set an early alarm (5:30) and then go back to sleep. I didn't have a problem with middle of the night wake-ups affecting my temp.

Before kids I def didn't take it at the same time everyday since I could sleep in on the weekend! I stopped relying on just temps and got OPKs haha.

Definitely get a bbt that is accurate to 1/100 of a degree. You'd be surprised at the amount of variation that 1/100 gives you.

I set my alarm for 5:45 every day and take my temp then, and just go back to sleep if I don't have to wake up.

I found that nighttime wakeups didn't really affect my temperature, maybe because I was usually only up for a few minutes to go to the bathroom. I think just being awake for a bit, if you don't get up, is probably not going to affect your temp much. I just set an alarm for the time I got up for work every day and on weekends went back to sleep after.

I temped before having kids, so I used to sleep way better! I did set an alarm for the earliest I usually wake up, 7 days a week- so I think like 6. Then I could go back to sleep after that on the weekends. If I woke up earlier I took my temp and noted that in my chart. It didn't seem to affect my temps that much but it does for other people.

And yes get a bbt specific thermometer. I had one that had a light and a memory function- it was a long time ago so don't remember the brand. It beeped as it took your temp, which some people don't like.

I could never do it now with kids. I sleep so lightly and wake up at the slightest noise from them. :(

This is my first cycle temping, and as much as I love the scientific-ness of it all, and analyzing my chart and everything, I hate taking my temp.

The probably is, I tend to wake up at least once in the middle of the night. So that's usually when I've been taking it because if I wake up at 3 am, it's less than 3 hours that I get up for the day. It's just not consistent. Sometimes it's 3, sometimes 4, on weekends it might be 6, etc. I usually wake up because of a dream, or my cats.

Do you guys just sleep through the night most nights? Maybe I should be doing some yoga before bed to help me sleep better or something.

My chart doesn't look as nice as some that I've seen. It also could be my thermometer. Maybe next cycle I should buy a real BBT one. (Mine isn't but goes to the 10th of a degree so I thought it would be fine).
