@scg00387: yeah... I guess it's because the landlord at the new place was unexpectedly hospitalized! so things were put on hold and it took a few weeks to get an answer.

@scg00387: haha yeah I always declutter like crazy when we move!! I already have about 4 garbage bags full of stuff for goodwill and I haven't even made a dent on packing.

We didn't find out we got the apartment until Monday, and we move Monday. So we have just a few more days to get everything packed.

@hilsy85: we've asked both - the one at our current place if we can have a week, and the one where we're moving if we can do it a day early. Neither have gotten back to us. But our current apartment manager (he isn't the owner) didn't seem too thrilled about some things, so I'm just trying to get out as fast as we can and not cause any problems.

@ladyfingers: My sister is an awesome cleaner - so she will be cleaning the whole place for us after we move out. I don't think it will be an issue, her coming after because no one is moving in after us.

@travelgirl1: Well, the 1st of the month is Monday. Which means DH would have to take off work and that is not ideal. I'm trying to see if we can move on Sunday instead.

@ladyfingers: that seriously sounds like a DREAM!! I had thought of hiring packers because that's the part I hate the most. Oh well. We don't have a ton of stuff and we left half of it packed because we knew we'd be moving again. So it's really just backing the bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen and random odds and ends like books, papers, DVD's etc. But it is still a lot!

We've moved every year to a new state and had one day to get out/in, it is no fun. My husband's work normally pays for movers, which is nice, but the last move something fell through and we had to move ourselves last minute. This time we'll be moving with a newborn.. so we'll definitely be paying for extra wiggle room to make it less stressful! My biggest tip if you're moving yourself is to watch Craigslist for free moving boxes and packing materials... and to start earlier than you think.. and to donate annnnything you question otherwise when you unpack it and don't want it, you'll wish you had :)

When we bought our house 6 months ago, we had a week gap between the date we had to be out of the old house (new tenants were moving in that day) and the date from which we could have the new house... so we had to hire a van and rent a storage lock up - to put all our belongings and furniture in. We then stayed with my in-laws for a week, after which we rented a van again and moved our belongings into our new house. It was very stressful!

@MrsBrewer: yeah I guess it is expensive...I may have overestimated, maybe it was $800? But like I said, it was well worth it! We were moving from a 4th floor walkup and I was 3 months pregnant, plus I had an awful stomach virus the weekend we moved so I would have been completely useless. We don't know a ton of people in NYC who are able/willing to help move our crap, so it made sense for us to hire movers :)

@hilsy85: Wow that's a lot! It's probably because it's in NYC though. I've never used movers, we just always rent a truck which comes out to be about $150 with mileage and we get friends to help and buy them all lunch!

@Mrsbells: We paid a flat rate using a moving company here in NYC (not sure where you're located). I think for them packing everything and moving it, it cost around $1000? It took about 7 hours from the time they arrived at our old apartment to the time they left our new apartment. It was well worth it though. We've used them before just to move our stuff as well, and both times they were very careful and didn't damage anything.

We always move all in one day! We normally pack up stuff starting a month before and gradually until the day of the move. We rent a moving truck, get as many friends and family over to help move! This last time we moved about 40 miles away, and moved from a 2 bedroom townhouse to a 3 bedroom home. We started at 9AM and had the moving truck unloaded by 1 PM in the afternoon same day! The key is to get as much help as possible!

@Mrsbells: I think we paid around $400, moving from a 2-bedroom 1,200-square-foot house to a 3-bedroom 1,500-square-foot house. They did it by the hour and took about 4 hours. They also had wardrobe boxes to use for free so we didn't have to pack any of our hanging clothes. I thought it was really reasonable for not having to worry about anything. They didn't require us to unpack drawers, they just moved the whole piece with everything in it, so that was a HUGE, huge help.

They were very careful with everything, they didn't bang anything into walls or drag anything against our floors. They put everything exactly where we wanted it. There was one incident where they dropped a very large mirror in their truck and they looked devastated about it. They immediately said they would take it back to their shop and they got a piece of glass custom-cut for it and delivered it back to us in perfect condition within a week or so. Which was fine with me because the old glass had sticky stuff all over it that annoyed me lol.

We were very happy and didn't know why we didn't do it before! Moving ourselves was always so awful and our friends were always so much more careless with our stuff than movers. We ended up with a broken lamp and a broken bookcase when we moved into our last house ourselves/with friends, and gave away our couch because nobody could figure out how to get it through the door lol.

I usually have a week overlap. I start packing boxes a couple of weeks before. When we get the new place I clean it then move a few car loads of boxes each day. On a day that my husband is off work we move the big things. Then I take a day to clean the old place.

It took us about 2-3 weeks to pack up all our stuff at the old place (with some marathons at the end). We ended up hiring movers for the first time ever, which was the best decision ever. We didn't have to be out in one day, but I wanted to be because I feel like it's more annoying to do back-and-forth for days at a time. I was able to go back in and clean the day after we moved, but I would suggest cleaning as you go. You might have to go back later that day to get behind where furniture was, etc.

Last time we moved, we hired movers to pack for us and move our things. BEST DECISION EVER. Made the whole experience much less stressful. In terms of time, we've usually had our new lease start about a week or two before our old lease ended, so we never had to deal with a gap. That's super annoying, but I would think your old landlord/new landlord would be able to work with you?

I had this problem when I lived right in Boston, it was awful. You had to be out on the last day of the month, but your lease didn't start until the first day of the next month. I ended up renting a van and loading up all my stuff and staying on a friend's couch until the next day.

Other places I lived were more flexible and you could move out late or in early depending on what you needed.

Like other posters, we've usually packed everything minus necessities a week or two in advance along with doing some cleaning where possible so come moving day, it was just packing up that final box, final clean up, and loading things into the truck. We also asked a couple friend to help us load/unload to help expedite things. After all the sweating is done, we take everyone out to dinner.

Can you rent a storage space for one month? When we move, we'll pack up all non-essentials and transfer them to a storage shed in our new location, first, whcih will greatly reduce the amount of stuff we actually need to pack/unpack on "moving day." Once we get the essential stuff set up in our new place, we can take our time cleaning out the storage shed.

We have always done the 1 day move, but I pack ahead of time, so the day of is literally just moving the boxes. I pack my least used stuff first, working towards the most used stuff which I pack last. I label all the boxes with where they go and order to unpack. Everything is freshly washed/laundered before packing so it can go straight into cupboards/closets.

I use my suitcase and toiletry bag for the last minute stuff, and sleep on my mattress on the floor, so moving day I just have to ball up the sheets, blankets and pillows and throw them in a contractor size garbage bag, and toss my toiletry bag in the suitcase.

We rent the largest size U-haul truck, and my last move was actually not only a 3 hour drive, but moving 2 houses into 1 house. We had both houses loaded into the truck (with 2 helpers) in 3 hours, plus the 3 hour drive, and 2 hours (with 2 helpers) to unload.

We then unpack boxes from most-least used over the course or about a week.

If we needed to move mid-week we would take the day off, but I have always been able to move on weekends.

definitely make sure everything you can is packed before hand - save things you need (for the baby or you guys) until the morning of.

label boxes with what room they go into and what it is in them, whether its written on the box or on a paper and taped on. that will help make it easier to unpack and find things when you get there! then you can unpack as you need things, without having to open every box that might contain your kitchen things to find one appliance!

I'm also really type A, so I'd probably have my own list of how many boxes for each room (i.e., "6 boxes labeled kitchen, 3 labeled living room) so if something was missing or forgotten I'd know which box it might be right away!

we moved yearly growing up until my parents bought a house at age 10.

@aprk: that totally sucks!! I definitely don't want to pay an extra months rent. Not worth it to me.

So do you all take the day off to move??

@mrs. bird: That is awful!! Well we know the current tenants so it won't be an issue lol
