@Pumpkin Pie: sorry I forgot to respond! We do eat play sleep so my kids eat after naps. There are regressions and times like illness when nursing down happens but it's rare for us. We have a strict sleep ritual and then we put the kids down awake. If your kid is okay with checks, I usually cry 20, then soothe a bit until calm, then down again. If they are still awake 30 minutes before naptime is up, I get them and move on with my day. My eldest did not handle checks so we had to straight CIO.

My kids were a little older when I nap trained so they had mostly stopped falling asleep while nursing but for me personally naps are not the hill I'm going to die on. So I would continue doing what you're doing. Try for naps in crib. If she falls asleep nursing, put in crib. She'll get it!

Today she fell asleep nursing for both naps. The first time, I unlatched her, burped her, and sat her up for about 5 mins. Then put in her crib awake, and she slept for 2 hours.

The second nap, after 2x attempts of napping, it was time for her to eat, so she fell asleep nursing and I just put her in the crib.

I guess I just don't want to create a nursing to sleep association and want to teach her to fall asleep independently.

I've been trying this for the last 2 weekends, and she will cry for the 20 mins, and then when I try to put her down again later, she will cry for 20 mins, and it'll be time to feed her. Then, she'll fall asleep nursing. How did you avoid them falling asleep while eating?

@Pumpkin Pie: when I did nap training I let them cry for 20 min, then get them and try again in an hr. Ie - down at 9am. Cry until 9:20. Get them, redo nap time at 10. Typically by the second time they were tired and would nap. A few days and no problems

@Pumpkin Pie: well then you may just have to bite the bullet and CIO. If it's something she knew how to do before, she can learn to do it again.

I've been experimenting with wake times from 1.5-2.25 hours. No matter what the wake time is, it doesnt seem to make a difference.

It might be useful to note that she USED to be able to put herself to sleep for naps at least 1/2 the time. But, ever since she got sick, that all went out the window.

Whatever you do be consistent. It's not fair to let the baby CIO for 30 minutes and go in to rock and hold because the baby just feels she needs to cry for 30 minutes for you to come rescue her.

Checks did not work for DS1 and so we just had to CIO extinction style with him. We did it all at once - night and naps. Night sleeping clicked faster than daytime naps but we just let him be. DS2 clicked on better on sleeping for long naps before STTN. His nighttime CIO was worse than his naps. But he responded to checks and quick soothing. Both got it within 2 weeks and other than illness, teething (we go in and offer ice water and Motrin), and really bad Wonder Weeks (there's one around 7 months that was bad for both kids where they just didn't nap well for weeks so I'd end up nursing them to a dead sleep and transferring them a few times a week when their overtiredness was too much) we generally just leave them alone. My 1 year old usually always wakes up during his naps and rolls around for a while and goes back to sleep because he knows naptime ain't over until I go get him.

I'm curious about wake times too. At 5.5 months my kids were on two and a half naps a day and transitioning to dropping the third nap. They woke up around 730am. When morning nap was 930-1130am, then afternoon nap was 130-330pm and they took a disco nap from 6-630pm with an 8pm bedtime. Or if morning nap was 10-12, then afternoon nap was 230-430 and they went to bed at 730pm for the night. If they are awake 30 minutes within the desired wake time then I get them or if they just hadn't slept at all, I get them 30 mins early.

We do the exact same routine aside from baths for nap. We read a book or two, we change into PJs and sleep sack, white noise, blackout curtains, same lullabies, etc.

Hmmm is 5.5 a little early to nap train? My son only starting napping on a schedule and with little fuss once he went to daycare at about 8 months. Maybe not but she might be 'doing her own thing' for a while.

Hi! How long is wake time before 1st nap?

ETA: I totally understand. I don't care what age the baby is - yes there is comforting that will always have to happen, but your sanity and self care also matter.

For us, it was a long process but it worked - I basically just went in and replaced his paci over and over again like a ninja. I didn't let him see me or get excited. I just stuck my hand over the back of the crib or stuck my hand through the slats while I crouched. And replaced. Over. And over. And over. No joke for the first 2-3 months of his life I did that probably every 30 mins for like 2 hours. It was maddening. But...eventually he learned how to keep the paci in and put himself back to sleep. And it was with relatively little crying.
Of course I'm not a monster - if he truly needed me he needed me. But if I could tell he was just waking up because he startled or needed a paci I just did that.
I will say though that I tried my hardest not to hold him for naps from day 1 (with the exception of Wonder Weeks and stuff like that) and for them to always be in the crib. So if you're dealing with a bigger transition like that I'm not sure I can help.

Oh and since you said he falls asleep on his own at night, you know he's capable. So that would 1) make me less afraid to do cio for nap and 2) makes me wonder if he's maybe overtired and that's what is making it hard to fall asleep - hence my initial question about wake time. Sorry for rambling! And 3) keep everything as identical as possible to bedtime routine and surroundings. So for us that was change diaper, white noise, swaddle/Merlin/sleepsack, feed, put down in crib. Blackout curtains.

Can you guys teach me how to nap train? I did nighttime/nap training with LO1 all in 1 shot, and it wasn't toooooo bad. We basically let her CIO until she learned how to fall asleep on her own.

LO2 goes down at night with very little to no crying. But naps are HORRENDOUS. She will not fall asleep unless we rock, stroll, wear and will wake up as soon as we put her down, stop strolling/moving. I've been trying to do CIO for naps, but the kid is freaking stubborn and will cry the whole entire time. Do I just keep at it, or is it useless? She's 5.5 months.
