Or give her everyday objects to hold and inspect. I used to worry about that too, and struggled with just letting her "hang out" but she enjoys some time alone in her swing and crib talks to mobile and gets used to it :) I am in FL so we walk a lot or hang out on porch! Sometimes I would just put LO in the bouncy chair while I folded laundry or tidied up the kitchen and narrate. I think going on walks is a great idea (fresh air! sunshine!) even if your LO falls asleep! Babies are stimulated by everyday life. We had a jumperoo that I would stick her in while I did chores. Once she could sit up, I would put her in a pack & play with toys while I did things. Usually one outing a day - a walk or an errand - was enough to blow her mind. I'm also the type who enjoys housework and I didn't feel bad about putting her in the bouncy chair or swing while I did that. Just letting baby lie there and look around is not a bad thing. My kids both loved the exersaucer, I hate all the space it occupies in my house but it is entertaining for the little ones and keeps them contained for a few minutes. Windows are also awesome as PP mentioned, even my 15 month old loves to sit and look out the window with cars or people/dogs passing by every 30-60 seconds. I also walked from room to room with LO, talking about the things in them. Also everything you are doing is interesting to them at that age, so just take time to do your normal things and narrate for baby while he observes. Outside of the house, some options are Mommy&Me type of classes (yoga or Stroller Strides) and storytime at library or bookstore. I had a lightweight bouncy chair that I carried everywhere with me, and I would put him in that and go about my business - cleaning, cooking, changing sheets, even reading magazines and stuff, and just narrate what I was doing for him. We also went out to eat A LOT - which is why at a year PP I still have 10 pregnancy kgs to lose! Still, I'm glad I did because now at a year old he needs to be constantly entertained if we go out to eat - back then he would sit happily in his stroller and watch the world go by. Mine is just 6 months now (29 weeks) but he's enjoyed looking out our window since 3 months. That can entertain for 10-15 mins. He also loves "My Pal Scout" stuffed animal. I can just push the paw over and over an he just squeals with delight. 10 mins? Exersaucer? I know there are mixed feelings about them but he has liked it since about 5 months and it majorly helps when I need some time to do something (scarf down food, pee, put away his laundry, etc). He can now be happily in it for 20-30 mins. Same with jumperoo. He also likes just sitting in his highchair and I put a variety of toys and teethers on it. Maybe 15 mins. we live in an apartment building so we even just venture down to the lobby and get mail and talk to the doormen. I also found that once we introduced solids it takes up a good 20 mins and breaks up the day a lot. She also gets a kick out of naked time. I just strip her down to her diaper and give her a little massage and little kisses and tickles all over her body. I carry her around the house and we look at different objects and paintings. We also have a piano gym and she just goes crazy on that thing. She can play on that for 30 minutes before she gets tired. Also, she still takes a while to eat (sometimes bottles still a fight, and she is such a distracted nurser), so that already takes up a lot of her awake time! Granted she is not quite 4 mo yet so her max wake time is 1.5 hrs. I'm waiting for weather to REALLY get warmer to go out on walks. I think sometimes down time is good too.. It is just starting to get warmer in Chicago, but pretty cold this week. We've only taken a few walks on some warmer days, but he tends to fall asleep in the stroller or carrier, so i don't know if i can count those as an activity! Here are some things we currently do and how long he can tolerate each activity, any other ideas? - tummy time (3 - 4 mins) - lie on play mat (10 - 15 mins) - sit in swing (10 mins) - sit in bumbo (3 - 5 mins) - look at board books (5 - 10 mins) - sit in front of a mirror so he can look at himself (3 - 4 mins) - wear him in a carrier (15 - 20 mins) - listen to music and dance around (5 - 10 mins) - peekaboo (2 - 3 mins) - dangle/help him touch his toys (5 mins) Anything else you guys do with your baby??
