@PurplePumps: It looks sooo much better. The trim in the house is actually white, but for some reason the previous owner decided to slap on dark wood on the stairwell. Anyways, the white trim really brightens up the wall and i'm glad i did it. Good luck with the painting!

@Freckles: lol, he doesn't care if I redo the paint. He doesn't paint, so if I want to do the work, it's completely up to me. =( Oh wow, I don't want to start with the trim cause then I'd just want to do the whole house, and I'm not ready for that! How's the grey look now after the wood was painted white?

@PurplePumps: DH would kill me if i redid the rooms. I also wish that i did a paint plan for the house beforehand so i can ensure better flow! So i painted our hallways that saturated grey only to find that it looked AWFUL with the mahogany wood trim and i ended up having to paint the trim white. Let's just say it took a week to finish everything!

I usually let my husband pick bc I suck at it.

But for our feature wall in the main living space we bit the bullet and bought a few sample cans after narrowing our choices with paint chips. We taped them on the wall and left them up for a few days so we can see the color at all different lighting.

P.S. You can take any swatch, paint chip, etc into a Lowes and they can scan that image in, take the RGB and color match a paint for you. :)

@Freckles: I agree 100%!! I was too cheap to buy the little samples and paid for it in more paint and wasted time. I've painted 4 rooms, and have redone 2 of them cause it just wasn't what I wanted. I want to redo a third, but I'm just too lazy. And the only color I got right, was a color I used before at my friends house.
For me, the only thing I try to take into account is if the paint color sort of goes with the house, and mostly if it matches our stained wood trim since I don't want to paint them white (yet).

I recommend buying some paint samples and painting big squares on the wall. See how the colours change throughout the day, and then decide on the paint colour.

Even neutrals like grey are really hard! I went with a grey that turned out to be a lot more saturated than i liked, and i really wished that i had taken the time to paint samples on the wall. I was too impatient!

I perused through Apartment Therapy a lot for ideas.

I love looking in home magazines for good colors that look good together. Then I would go home and paint part of your wall that color to see how you like it.

Congrats on being a homeowner!

We looked at a bunch of pictures of houses until I found my inspiration. I got one bold color for the dining room and below the chair rail in the kitchen and then a seperate bold color to go in our master bath to match our curtains which color I ADORED. For the rest of the house we got a bunch of swatches that complimented our bold color and put them on the wall to narrow it down.

What really helped was buying those tiny paint samples. Sure they add up but it is cheaper to paint a sample on the wall and realize you hate it vs painting the whole wall and realizing you hate it after you bought gallons of it!

*picking* paint has been pretty easy - we've just grabbed swatches, and decided from there...but we lean to neutrals. Now *agreeing* on a paint color is something else entirely. ,

We've just gone through choosing colors for our hallway and I really liked the benjamin moore ap! You can choose a color from their spectrum and they'll show you options with two additional colors that go with it/compliment the original color.

We've been in the process of picking a color for our master bedroom for the past few months! I have a general idea of what color I want, but it's been so difficult. We have purchased numerous amounts of paint samples (which have probably added up to more than the amount of paint we will actually need to purchase when we find the color). I've been searching online, looking at color swatches, and bringing home paint samples to paint squares on our bedroom walls. Colors look so different at home than in the store, and the colors even vary from one wall to the next depending on how the light hits it. Right now our bedroom walls look like patchwork! Good luck!

Honestly, we got lazy and we had the interiors painted a creamy white. I love it so far because everything looks bright!

This article on Young House Love has some good inspiration on paint colors

http://www.younghouselove.com/2013/03/gimme-some-moore/

whatever colors you pick, I really like to have white trim/moldings instead of off-white... really brightens the place up and makes it look new

I usually have a general idea of the color I want in a room, but just general, like 'blue.' Then I go to Lowe's and get 8000000 paint swatches and look at them in daylight and night-time light, and narrow them down that way.

I also take into account the furniture colors in the room, and how I want the general vibe to be. Bright colors in the living room/entryway for a dramatic entrance, and nice calm blue in the bedroom, etc.

Oh and YAY NEW HOUSE!

Congrats! Sadly I've never gotten to paint anything other than my classroom. But I'm a dreamer and I remember reading advice about considering which direction the room faces. Like rooms with north/south exposure would want different shades of color.

We are new homeowners! One of the first things we need to do is spackle some spots and paint. I have pinned some colors on pinterest, but it is so hard to choose!

What did you take into account and how did you decide when picking interior paint colors?
