I had a wonderful birth experience- the epidural took the pain away but I still felt pressure and was able to feel the contractions when it was time to push. In any case, my family, no matter how large we physically look have small pelvises. I may not even have another option than a C-section once labor begins. It is major abdominal surgery and will take longer to recover but it's still a birth and possibly the only way to bring my child into this world. But I've watched birth videos and read so many stories about vaginal birth, that it sounds AWFUL to me. Like something I'd avoid at all costs. I had the option to do a water birth, but my contractions were so close together I didn't have any time between them to get in the tub. I ended up with a non-medicated birth, I hadn't intended to do this, but I was able to deal with the pain by changing my positions frequently. </p> <p>Re: home births, given how much I groaned and cried out, I wouldn't do it unless I was living in a single family home! (It also helps that I love my OB and fully trust him.) I also told myself that I wouldn't get upset if I ended up having a c-section...additionally, I did not attend any birth classes, watch birth videos, or anything of the sort. I just trusted that the doctors and nurses would help me bring the baby into the world in the best way possible.</p> <p>I ended up getting an epidural with pitocin to help with the progress. I call myself a posterchild for epidurals because labor was SUCH a breeze after that (I know, don't hate me!). When it came time to push, I still didn't feel pain...just pressure. And Claire was out in literally 12 pushes, or 5 minutes!</p> <p>I know that everyone makes different birthing choices and I respect them. But here's one mom who had a hospital, medicated childbirth with no complications at all. I really think it helped that I had no birth plan, and that I had a great doctor whom I trusted. I don't like the idea of not knowing when my baby is coming, and teaching classes means pretty rigid schedules. I have a friend who planned her births around her class syllabi and semester breaks, and that seems like a practical and sane idea to me. I am not pregnant now though, and i may change my mind. Contractions were incredibly intense, but more in the "I need to scream now as an outlet" way than the straight up painful way. My biggest fear about future labor(s) is that I got spoiled by how easy and quick (5 hours start to finish) this one was, so I'll be doubly disappointed if interventions are required next time.
