I also have a 12 week old and 2.5 yo! For me it's a reverse problem as the DD baby distracts my DS toddler from sleeping. It's just taken time for him to get used to her and some days he just passes out from exhaustion.

When she's sleeping and he's awake, he just wakes her up sometimes. I don't have her sleeping in a quiet room or anything. She is used to the noise unless it's really loud.

I used to be able to set up Little Boy with an activity while I nursed Baby Brother, with white noise on in a dark room. Currently though he's going through a mischievous phase though, so I just put on a DVD for 20 minutes. :/ For the afternoon nap/quiet time I try to put down the older one first while baby plays on the floor in his room, and then put the baby down. The best thing though was getting Baby Brother onto two naps instead of three (but I know there's only so much you can do to make that happen).

I forgot to mention that we also have "special" toys that he's only allowed to play with when I put my daughter down for her nap. He LOOOVES these toys so it's always a special treat for him. So similar to what @t-mom suggested, maybe you can find a special toy or DVD for her?

I didn't have this issue with day time sleep since I work and the kids were in day care. However my DH was never home for bed time so I used the TV to keep my DD (who was 3) occupied while I nursed DS to sleep. It sounds like you may need to just get your LO more accustomed to being alone for short periods of time. Maybe if there is a new DVD to be excited about?

I can't remember what I did for morning naps. I feel like DD would just hang out while I tried to put DS down. Or, DS just slept on the go (which I know is bad). For the afternoon naps I got them on the same schedule FAST and I would put DD down first. Even though DS would often just scream in the swing, it allowed me to give him the full attention he needed to really get him to sleep without the distraction of DD.

It depends on her mood. She'll play quietly if she's in a calm mood. If she's being wild, I stick her in front of the TV! So it depends on the day. Just make sure to teach the baby to fall asleep on his own so you can be in and out quickly!

Yeah, this was really tough for me too because my son was really attached to me once the baby came home. It was hard to get anything done around the house. It's so much easier just having to take care of one. But having two kids when you're solo parenting is SO different. The only thing that worked was having him eat some snacks while watching TV. I know, it's not great. But you gotta do what you gotta do! I'll let him watch one episode of Mickey while eating some cereal or yogurt. That usually bought me 20 minutes of time. There's not way my daughter would nap if my son was making noise. She's a light sleeper.

So maybe try snacks + ipad/TV? I didn't feel comfortable letting him play by himself unsupervised so the TV was the best solution for me. Whenever possible, I would take both of them for a walk and try to stroller nap her.

I used to always feed DS to sleep, with white noise blaring and DD sitting on the floor next to me, until DS was about 3-4 months old. At that point, I switched over to rocking him to sleep. I would put DD in her room with an activity (books, puzzles, etc...) and then go rock DS. I put a door handle guard (the kind that keeps kids from opening the door) on the outside of DS's door so DD couldn't open it. At first, she would try to open the door while I was rocking DS, and sometimes she would wander off to play until I came and sometimes she would cry until I opened the door. Eventually, she realized that when I was rocking DS she couldn't come in, and now she hangs out in her room by herself until I'm done. As long as I have the white noise, DS doesn't really notice if DD is making noise.

Getting DS on a nap schedules was easier for us, since we had no weekly activities. Usually we'd go out for a walk or running errands during DS's morning nap, and he would sleep in the carrier or carseat. We were home every afternoon, so the kids had their afternoon naps together, in their beds. DS's third nap was usually around 4, so DD would hang out in her room while I put DS to bed, and then we'd make dinner together.

Hi all,
I have a 12 week old baby and a 2.5 yr old toddler. My toddler goes to daycare/preschool three days a week. My baby usually falls asleep in his carseat on the way home from dropping his older brother off. And for the rest of the day, I do errands so he does a lot of sleeping in carseats or in a rocker when we are at home.

I would like to get him started on a napping schedule or at least some sort of routine. However, I am at a loss as to how to put him to bed when his older brother is at home and making all sorts of noise. My toddler is high energy and always likes to be by my side also. I have thought about having my toddler watch a little TV/ipad but he seems to still want to be by my side when he does it, which makes for a lot of noise. And my baby wakes so much more easily now than before! Help!

For those who had an infant and toddler, how do you handle daytime naps?
