@NovBaby1112: do you have a baby carrier? We get max naps of 30 minutes in the bouncer or swing, but he'll sleep for 2-3 hours in the Ergo. It's a little harder to get stuff done while I'm wearing him, but it does the job for both of us.

Ok update I tried swaddling and it seems to help a bit, I rock her to sleep for about 10 mins then put her in swing bouncer or crib and she goes for 30-40 mins....my question is , when she wakes up she seems tired still but starts crying bc she realizes I'm not holding her....I don't want to get in the habit of holding her for all naps but I also don't want her to be overtired and fussy...I think 9 weeks is too early to let her cry a bit and see if she goes back to sleep correct? But I don't want to have to rock her back to sleep every time she wakes up every half hour! Will she expect this everytime? What should I do??

I agree swaddling is essential. DS used to fight it but I stuck with it and he would sleep like a charm. At that ate I did a 6/9/12/3/6/9 schedule and stuck with it. It was super easy and he napped/played in between feedings.

@NovBaby1112: try swaddling for naps. I get MUCH longer naps out of her when I really commit and do a proper swaddle and put her in the crib. If I use the swing or bouncer she falls asleep quicker but doesn't stay asleep as long.

@kml636: that sounds like a great schedule, I, trying to aim for a 2-3 hour one as well... my LO is the same when overstimulated or overtired...I have a hard time catching it before it gets to that point lately

@skibobrown: well hopefully you have a great night sleeper on your hands!! sometimes just accepting that this is the way things are is soo much easier than fighting it, I totally agree about doing whatever it takes for her to sleep, even if that means napping on me

@hilsy85: thanks for sharing your routine!! I have the eat and awake part down but the sleep part she has been fighting me on...she is refusing to go down for naps lately ughh

We do EASY, so he eats, has awake play time fur about an hour or so and then I swaddle him and rock him to sleep with a paci. If he wakes up before its been about an hour, I'll rock him back to sleep. Then when he wakes up he eats, and repeat. He's 11 wks old and takes 3-4 naps per day, and they're between 45 min and 3 hours.

My daughter never napped for more than 30 minutes at a time until very recently. She is 9 months old. I also still to this day cannot get her to nap unless I rock her to sleep. She's just not a napper. I fought this for ages and was convinced I was doing something wrong, but eventually I just gave in and realized that this is the baby I have been given. She will eventually nap like a normal baby I think... and she's finally starting to get there, but it has been a very very long process. I say if your baby needs rocking / swing / lying on mama / being in the baby carrier to nap effectively, then just do it and don't feel guilty about it!

Naps are really hard. My LO is on a three hour schedule, *ideally* where she eats for about 30 mins, plays for 30 - 60 mins, then naps for 1.5 - 2 hours. Lately she has been fighting this and either refusing to nap or waking up after 45 mins.

Usually I try to get her to nap 2 times per day in the crib, the other two in the stroller or car seat or swing. But,since she's been waking up, I end up putting her in the swing anyways just to get her to sleep because she is a bear when she's overstimulated!

@BabyBoecksMom: ahhh I would kill for 1-2 hour naps!! Hopefully soon tho...I figured it was prob too early for a schedule, a routine is prob more realistic

@littlek: lucky!! Yes she likes the swing but I still only get 30 mins in that :/ maybe I just don't have a long mapper

@Weagle: hmm maybe I'll try the tummy thing....I rock to sleep too, which I know they say you shouldn't do but she won't sleep if I just put her in something awake

@scg00387: that's a pretty good routine! I am trying the whole eat active time then sleep, but its hard bc she falls asleep after nursing

@highwire: that's awesome she falls asleep on her own!!! I wish she could fall asleep in the car but she is little miss nosey lol and loves looking at everything

So today I tried the swing after nursing and got 40 mins on that then I put her in my ktan when she woke and she dozed off again! Yay for a little longer nap!

@NovBaby1112: no real schedule at almost six weeks he wakes, eats, diaper change, play, swaddled and down or napping on someone. Repeat! Usually half hour to two hours for naps and then a combo of one four-five hour sleep chunk with three or two hours after for nighttime.

He's typically put down drowsy or lightly asleep for naps in his crib and overnight

Like @BabyBoecksMom: I couldn't get her on a schedule. She was 6.5 months before we had a regular nap schedule. We had a routine before that, but even that changed constantly as she did. At that age I always put her down already asleep. She wasn't able to soothe herself then and she didn't take a paci. At 10 weeks I started letting her nap on her tummy and naps got MUCH better!

My LO was on the schedule they set up for him at the NICU. He was a preemie so he had no issue sleeping, I usually had to wake him for feedings. Have you tried naps in the swing? Or taking LO on a stroll so she falls asleep in the stroller?

@NovBaby1112: To be honest, I couldn't get her on a schedule to save my life. It became more of a routine than a schedule, especially so early. She would nap for about 1-2 hours and be awake for only about an hour before she needed a nap again. When it was time for a nap, I would usually nurse, swaddle and rock her to sleep before putting her in the crib (already asleep). It took a while, but once she got the hang of that routine, she went down easily for naps.

my DD is almost 8 weeks (so not technically a newborn, but not on a reg schedule during the day). we were doing a baby led schedule where I let her nurse and sleep when she wanted, but now that she is almost 8 weeks I am trying to get her into more of a routine during the day (our nighttime routine is pretty good and she follows that).

my question is, how did you put your newborn down for naps at a certain time? I tried to put her down today in her crib because I saw she was tired, but she cried everytime I put her in awake. normally during the day I just let her fall asleep on my chest and then once she is totally asleep i transfer her to the vibrating bouncer, but she ends up only sleeping for 30 or so minutes in that. I'd like to get longer stretches of naps out of her. I am curious how many naps a day your newborns take and for how long. we are currently on somewhat of a schedule of nurse, active time for an hour or so, then nurse again and sleep for 30 minutes and start over again. as you can see, i dont get a lot of down time!
