@mediagirl: We don't typically hang out with people we aren't close to so maybe that's the situation. But even at playgrounds and public places like that I find that for the most part people are pretty aware if their child is bullying other kids. The only place I had an issue was when we went to Monkey Joe's (one of those indoor bounce house places) and this litle boy was following us around the whole time. But even then, he was being nice to M, he just latched on to us because his mother was ignoring him.

@MamaMoose: in the case I was speaking of, I was at a friend's house who had other people over who I did not know. Have you only ever spent time with your lo around kids of your friends? I'm surprised you haven't run into this yet. Not all people are as conscientious as your friends sound like they are.

Ugh, I dealt with this several times last week. There is a kid from my son's school who has become the bully on the playground after school. He's also 4, so he should, in my mind, have some idea that he shouldn't push the other kids around. I saw him intentionally stick out his foot to trip a young toddler. I've been very vigilant every time this kid is near my son and have told him several times to stop pushing, I say "Child's name, you need to stop pushing/hitting/throwing, etc.". His mother is always off somewhere else, not paying any attention.

Just today we were at a shower at a park and one of the other kids around Dds age (that she's not familiar with) shoved her down and then laid on top of her. My Mama Bear came out and I jumped up and said "no! You don't push!" I kinda surprised myself at how strongly I reacted. I thought afterwards maybe I should've been more gentle (like saying "please don't push her).

I say, no pushing or hands to yourself. I have no problem with it if the parents aren't paying attention. I don't mind saying it if I see another child get pushed too.

When it seems like my lo is going to get run over/shoved/whatever I usually just move her out of the way. As she gets older I will say something to the other child but right now with her being so little I just usually move her and say something to her like "let's just let these kids have a little space." I find that usually the other kid's parent says something to their own child. I guess I have been lucky, and also it's probably because lo is usually the littler one.

If their parent is stepping in to correct them. I just comfort my daughter. If not, I don't hesitate to tell the kid to stop it.

@MamaMoose: I am the same way, and am hyper aware of watching my kid, but I do not find many others around me are.

I would say something like "please don't push, it's not nice to push your friends". But I'm always surprised by these threads because I feel like my friends are hyper aware of watching their own kids for these things. Like we all tend to favor the other person's kid over our own if there is a dispute.

Depends on how old the kid is. If it's a little toddler around Lo's age (2), I'll usually say, "let's play gently!" Or something like that, usually in a sweet voice (at least the first time... Haha).

If it's an older child, I'll say, "excuse me, please don't push her." I'm usually sterner :)

I'll defend him. i'll just say, "Please don't push (or hit, or whatever action is happening to my kid)." I definitely won't just sit by while my kid gets picked on.
